Pittsburgh and Syracuse to join the ACC

Pittsburgh and Syracuse depart the Big 12 to join the ACC.

I've been completely deaf to the apparent large conference realigning that's been going on in college sports, so I was quite taken aback when I read in the newspaper today that Pittsburgh and Syracuse will be joining my beloved ACC.

Now this only affects me for college basketball but I already know this this going to mean big changes for the ACC in regards to competition. If nothing else, it will better prepare Duke for the NCAA tournament. :D

The article doesn't indicate when the change will take place, but a friend tells me that the Big 12 requires 27 months notice to depart (actually, I just realized he said Big East but I'm going to assume he meant Big 12). I seem to recall knowing a year or two in advance when Boston College, University of Miami, and Virginia Tech moved over to the ACC, so I'm betting it won't effect this upcoming basketball season.

Thoughts, concerns, angry rants of betrayal?

I think this is more about football than any of the other sports, honestly. College football seems to be trending towards four 16-team super conferences, likely the ACC, SEC, Big-10, and the Pac-12 (or whatever those last two end up calling themselves). The additions of Pitt and Syracuse will bring the ACC to 14 teams, so they'll still need two more. My guess would be West Virginia (fairly big program, plus a strong rivalry with Pitt) and either UConn or Rutgers.

I just hope we manage to keep the teams we already have as well. I've heard rumors of FSU, VT and/or Clemson jumping ship for the SEC. Although, being a Georgia Tech alum, I wouldn't exactly blame them.

And BTW, they're coming from the Big East, not the Big 12. :D
