Some friends and I were joking about monopoly variants, and I thought of an idea which was a somewhat dark joke at first, but the more I think about it, the more the gameplay intrigues me.
So I'm starting this thread for us to pitch ideas for board games and comment on each other's pitches.
My idea, a combination of Monopoly and Pandemic. Players are split into two groups.
One group is playing Pandemic, a cooperative game where they are trying to stop the spread of a horrible disease. They achieve victory if they cure the disease, they fail if it spreads to a point it can not be controlled.
The other group is playing Monopoly, buying up pharmaceutical companies and selling drugs to the first group. The winner if this game is the player with the most money when the first group either achieves victory or defeat.
Besides the appeal of the social satire aspect, I love the idea of having two separate games played on the same board, where the actions of players in each game affects the outcome of the other. Half the strategy revolves around incentivizing the players of the other game to play in a way that benefits your game. Like, you agree to cut the drug prices in the region you monopolize if they play a regulation card that hurts your opponents. Or, you agree to buy exclusively from one player's stores if they keep their prices reasonable, or move their supply where you want them to.
The problem with this game is that you'd probably need minimum 6 players to play, but I think it'd be really strategically intriguing if I or some other designer put the work into testing and balancing it.
