Anyone watch the Stargate spin-off SGA?
love JoeFlanigan/Rachel Luttrell etc and what Wright/Cooper did with the show?
Any diehards think the Doc has abandoned us Trek fans by going to StargateAtlantis?
LOL

Robert Picardo joins the cast of Stargate Atlantis full-time this season, and he spoke exclusively with GateWorld on the set of the show this spring. Picardo discussed his work in the two venerable science fiction franchises, including his fondness for playing characters who discover a need to reinvent themselves.

Just because an actor takes a rather prominent role in another TV series doesnt mean they abandon Star Trek. He needs to pay a mortgage like everyone else and last I checked Voyager is off the air...

Didn't like him in VOY (in fact, the EMH is my least favorite Trek character ever).

Like him even less in the Stargate shows.

Does this guy have any other way of portraying a character other than 'smarmy'?

I don't think its his fault, TOS and TNG was supported greatly by the studio and PTB with growing budgets etc Since "Gene" Roddenberry passed away certain people have been less enthusiastic about supporting a DS9 movie, Enterprise movie or Voy movie so I certainly do not blame the actors

Might be something to do with himself and LeVar Burton having IQ's of 182. He's got much different depth in the series Lion's Den and for something insanely funny check him out in Total Recall. Personally I can live with "smarmy" much better than naked HimBos playing raptor pilot. DS9 fans might want to check the introduction of an SGA character played by Nicole de Boer

He certainly is not the only person to move from ST to SG, he just caught a break and went from returning guest part to steady work.

Any Trek guest cast -- let alone regular character -- can do whatever they want; but they will never be forgotten or disassociated with Star Trek. For better or worse, ever.

How can you abandon a show that's no longer being made? :wtf:

Do you expect him to stay unemployed and poor for the rest of his life out of loyalty to a job he essentially got laid off from?

I've only seen the pilot of SG:A, never really watched SG, but now that it has my favourite actor from ST:VOY and my fav from Firefly, I might have to!!
Great to see Bob and Jewel back on screen.

SG:A stinks, but at least Picardo has a job. Trinneer, too. Stargate is filled to the gills with actors I wish would get gigs on better shows because the substandard writing is so far beneath their talents, it's painful to watch. That goes for Ben Browder, too.

When the Daedalus beamed Woolsey to Atlantis in the season opener, when he first appeared did anyone else think, "Please state the nature of the medical emergency"? :guffaw:

I liked his Voyger character better than the SG character, so far. His mannerisms are so similar between the two characters it is hard to separate them.

As for SGA, I think it peaked with the writing of "Michael" in the second season. Since then it seems to be mostly shoot and run adventure. Not a lot of thought provoking plot or deep acting.

The link didn't work, so is this something he said that you're paraphrasing or is it just something you're asking on your own?

Because I've heard Trek fans say some pretty stupid things over the years, but I can't fathom anyone thinking that he's "abandoned Trek fans" by taking another genre role in a franchise that's featured many Trek alumni when there aren't even any other Trek series on the air. That's just a bizarre thing to say.

Indeed. I quit watching SG:A at the end of the third season. They killed of the doctor, and they reduced Weir to a recurring character.

The only reason why was still watching was some of the character, and two of them gone. :shrugs:

Stargate degenerated into a cheesy, easy fix just in time, no limitations on any technology, never a deeper thing to explore, that a certain nBSG writers accuses a good chunk of Star Trek to be, and then became even worse.

A guilty, mindless, popcorn entertainment it was reduced to, and I no longer have any interest in it.

And, no, I won't be going to watch it, or give it three episodes, just because Picardo is in it. Seriously, just because he's on it permanently, doesn't mean the writers are suddenly going to produce deep, meaningful stories.

One of the very few interestingly written episodes of the series, sure. And even then, the plotline works only via the protagonists being total idiots.

Trineer was outstanding in it, tho.

Re: the OP... "Let's just say, he doesn't live on a place I like to call Earth."
On our planet, either you work or the bills don't get paid. Some Trek actors like to sit on their laurels and pray for convention appearances. Some like to get on with their lives and pay the bills, while appreciating what their participation in Trek gave them.
