Picard (PIC) Books

One finger slip… Moderator, would you please change the title to “Picard (PIC) Books”?

I’m almost through Last Best Hope and really enjoying it. I got it through my local library and am looking for a local bookstore that has it in hardcover to purchase. Una McCormack is wonderful at characterization. Maddox (Brophy) is delightful to read. I can hear the actor’s furrowed brow.

And I don’t want this feeling to end. Until her next PIC installment, I’m here to ask about some of the other PIC books. Is Dark Veil or Rogue Elements as good? Which should I read/skip?

I’m a little sad the Titan crew doesn’t appear to be the same as from the Titan book series; I loved the alien diversity there so much. Can someone tell me about this crew?

There's a Vulcan doctor, a Denobulan at the helm, an El-Aurian diplomatic officer and a Kelpien in security. Christine Vale is still the first officer. Ranul Keru and Karen McCreedy are back too, with McCreedy now being the chief engineer.

Having read all three, I'd rank them in the following order (from best to less than best):
The Last Best Hope
Rogue Elements
The Dark Veil

In my opinion, all three are fine ST novels, certainly of a higher quality than many works we've gotten over the years. Last Best Hope is amazing and does a superb job of filling out the backstory we got in the first season of Picard.

The other two are not quite at the same level, but are both good, solid ST stories. I've put Rogue Elements above Dark Veil just because it is more unconventional in terms of the story it tells. It focuses on Cristobal Rios, one of the more unusual characters in Picard, and one who we don't learn a great deal about beyond a particular traumatic event. Like Last Best Hope, it fills in a lot of the backstory we learned from Picard, and tells a very atypical tale in the ST universe. If you don't enjoy stories that pull in lots of other bits of ST lore from over the years, that might be a negative factor for you.

Dark Veil is also a solid ST story, but doesn't relate as directly to many of the events in Picard, although it does fill in a key aspect of the Riker-Troi backstory. Mostly it gives us a look at the ST universe during the time just after the last major events of Last Best Hope. Since it's set on the Titan during Riker's command, it does give us a look at the crew of that ship in the Picard timeline, which does include some of the characters created for the litverse Titan books.

Hope this is helpful. In my opinion, you can't miss with any of the Picard books published so far, and I look forward to the one coming next year.

The dark Veil tells The backstory about Riker and Deanna Troi with their son Thad on the Titan. And a mysterious alien race and the Romulans in the book. It fills in the backstory for Picard season show one Nepenthe . It's really well written and one of my favorite novels written by James Swallow. Rogue Elements is about Rios delves into his back story and is the longest Picard novel yet. It's also well written and it's nice you get more of Rios story of how he got the La Sirena and his adventures are really intriguing.I liked both books. Next May we're getting a new Raffi novel by Una McCormack Second self.
