Just something I've been pondering while rewatching Voyager on prime and TNG on bluray... Picard in VOY situations would... - not kill Tuvix but would defend his rights - promise to give the holographic doctor some rights, and then would actually forget about him for years - tell Neelix to stay off his bridge, but Kes would remain as counselor on the bridge Janeway in TNG situations would... - blow up the aliens at Farpoint station - use Hugh against the borg - order Riker to take his own command - would not beg Q to help them in Q Who I also realized that if Janeway and Picard ever came face to face in a ship-in-space scenario, Janeway would likely be taking the role of someone like Maxwell from The Wounded. in other words, I think Janeway would be flying off the handle and Picard would be trying to stop her. What do you guys think, any scenarios of you own?
Why would Janeway be flying off the handle? There were times she got angry and reacted in her anger (Equinox been the main example) but that wasn't the norm. Most of the time she was completely in control and not flying off the handle. I assume you are not a Janeway fan Makarov?
Because it seems that Janeways is quicker to anger and makes some questionable diplomatic decisions from Picard's perspective, not to mention ethical problems, for instance the Tuvix situation. Granted she's under the pressure of being stranded, but if you put Janeway into the structure of a guest on an episode of TNG I can definitely see her fulfilling the role of the "wrong" captain that Picard must correct.
Considering it was the same production team that brought us TNG who was also bringing us VOY, there was bound to be overlap of this sort. It just showed the limits of their writing ability, rehashing the same themes the same way, so often. As to who would be on top - Picard or Janeway - I suspect that as long as he was getting his cookies, he was fine with however it worked out. But beyond a one-night-stand, Janeway wasn't Picard's type of woman.
One problem with a hypothetical situation of pitting the main captains against each other is individual fan bias. The one the fan likes the least will always be cast as the bad guy.
Picard would not have been able to handle the Borg as well, we saw that in First Contact. One of the reasons I like that movie, his obsession/breakdown is believable.
Well, I'd like to hear a scenario where they meet and Picard is the bad guy. I'm not sure why you suggested Janeway is more rash just because she's a woman though. That's just her personality.
I didn't really suggest it, that was my reaction to you how you phrased this: Rather than the other way around. The phase "flying off the handle" most likely wouldn't be used when describing Ben Maxwell's behavior.
Flying-off-the-handle isn't gender specific - and coming from a big fat nerd who just rewatched all seven seasons of Voyager in a few weeks, I can attest to Janeway's inclination to do so. I skipped over The Inner Light during my TNG rewatch last month, but I can still imagine Janeway would have fashioned some old timey bombs and held the entire shire hostage until they returned her to Voyager... and that kinda thing is why she never learned to play an instrument.
