Picard and Guinan

Kilana2

Vice Admiral
Admiral
When did the friendship between Guinan and Jean-Luc Picard start?

I have read The Buried Age and I know they are friends for quite some time.
I know that a time-travelling Picard met Guinan in 1893.

Where is Guinan now, what is she doing?
I have read Indistinguishable From Magic featuring Guinan, but it left me dissatisfied.

Their first meeting from Picard's perspective is depicted in Stargazer: Oblivion.

I thought as much. Michael Friedman's Stargazer novels are on my yet-to-read list.

Don't worry, though. I'm resistant againsts spoilers. ;)

I refrain from reading the MB entry, because I plan to read this novel some day.

Can I read the Stargazer novels independently?

Of each other, or of the rest of Trek Lit? They do have an overall arc unifying them, but it's a pretty loose arc, so if you just wanted to read one, you could follow it pretty well. And they pretty much stand apart from the rest of Trek Lit.

I do think you'll get an enhanced enjoyment out of Stargazer if you read the books before it in the series that establish characters and relationships and subplots, but you can also enjoy it as a stand alone and still follow that story.

Usually I don't have problems with reading novels independently without knowing the whole story arc.

Thanks for the advice.

And I have a little basic knowledge about Picard and his Stargazer crew.

You probably would want to read Reunion as that was where a lot of the Stargazer characters first appeared. It is set in what was the TNG "present" at the time whereas the Stargazer novels are in the "past".

Yeah, Oblivion should stand alone just fine.

A different account of their first meeting is given in the short story "Together Again, for the First Time" by Bobbie Benton Hull in the first Strange New Worlds anthology.

I have ordered Oblivion now. It should take a while until it is delivered from UK to Germany, though. :)

It's the one time you don't want a first printing. There was a printing error that affected every copy, making invisible the letters close the cut edge of several groups of pages.

The error was corrected for the second printing and beyond.

Oooops. I will wait and see until it arrives. It would be outrageous if they sell books with printing errors. Alas, I ordered it in a used condition.... Shouldn't they have taken books with printing errors off the market?

FWIW they offered the affected pages for download back then on the S&S site. No idea if that is still available.

The way Trek books were pre-selling at the time, the original print run was often exhausted very soon after release, and the second printing for this book was hurried into stores. And yes, free downloadable PDFs were offered for the affected pages.

Today my Oblivion copy has arrived. I have discovered the printing error. Pages 72 and 74..........

Unfortunately there is no PDF download available. I guess I have to fill in the missing words by myself.

I wonder if Guinan is really El Aurian at all or is just impersonating one. Q warned Picard about her and she seems to be able to protect herself from Q...

The link is dead, Steve had a link to it in the old FAQ thread:

Q. What happened in Stargazer: Oblivion on pages 72, 74, 195, and 197?
A. The first printing has an error that means some text is omitted on these pages. The full text can be found on the SimonSays site. Alternatively, you could buy the eBook or do as I did, and keep your eyes peeled for the second printing, and give up after a year of not finding it. Margaret Clark, editor of Stargazer, says: "Look at the copyright page, you know that page you blow by it's got the Paramount mountian and Gertude (the Pocket logo has a name, like who wouldn't?) the 1 should be missing and the first number should be a 2. This is the second printing the printing errors were corrected on this edition."

I don't have the PDF anymore and my scanner isn't working properly ATM, but ...

Oh. I only perused it superficially and didn't realize that pages 195 and 197 also are affected.
Thanks for your help.

May I save or at least print the pages? Only as addition to the book I already have and for my own use of course.

Four pages out of context for a book when S&S provided the same thing themselves for free in the past should be completely legal as fair use in both the US and Germany, I'd imagine.
