Indeed, our heroes had speculated that an energy release would suffice; they were proven wrong when their deflector trick failed. Something else was afoot there, and only the aliens on the other side knew how to deal with it; our heroes could again only speculate that they wanted the hydrogen for the purposes of an energy release, and odds are that they again speculated wrong.
