Photo sharing site?

Here's a question for everyone:

I've got a lot of family photos I want to share, but only with family and friends, so instead of putting them on my Facebook account (which is mostly work-related) or my flickr account (which is all work-related), I'm thinking of opening an account with another photo-sharing service.

Does anyone know which is the best for what I want to do? Basically, I want to be able to restrict access to the pics only to "subscribers" or whatever you want to call it. I've had a blogger page that I've used for this for a while, but since I mostly want to share photos, I figured I should look into just using an invitation-only account.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You can restrict access to your photos in flickr.

I believe you can restrict access in facebook, too, but I couldn't tell you to what extent.

Worst-case, just create a new "Shatnerage-personal" account in either, that way you can only invite the indivuals you want to have access to that account.

OK, thanks.

Does anyone with a flickr account post images from there here? I know they don't like you hotlinking, and when I tried to put the code they give you in a post here, I didn't get an image.

I've got a lot of photos my wife took at last year's LV convention, but I'm only going to upload them if I can post them in posts here.

It's likely that their code link is an html link and not an image link to be used on boards. I know they say you shouldn't hotlink, but I'm paying for the service, so I feel it's only fair that I do. I just right click on the size of image to copy the link, then I use the image tag here.

See, works fine:

And yes, it's one of my own images. Anyhow. I feel flickr is very flexible in terms of who has access. You can even give people temporary access by emailing them an invitation to view pictures and they don't even have to have an account.

If it's your flickr account, then linking to it to post pictures here is perfectly all right. Under board policy, it's only a problem if you post images hosted on someone else's account without their permission.

You need to be sure you select the BBCode option and it'll work. (Also, instead of copying the whole block of code, you can paste just the part wrapped in IMG tags and still have it work.)

Ohhh, oops. Wasn't sure if he was referring to the board's policies or to Flickr's. I was confused because flickr doesn't really like you hotlinking, and I feel as a paying user that I should be able to.

I haven't used Flickr more than a handful of times to post photos elsewhere and wasn't aware of any policy frowning on hotlinking altogether, though they are particular about linking back to the Flickr page containing the photo in question. From here:
Do link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content elsewhere.
Flickr makes it possible to post content hosted on Flickr to other web sites. However, pages on other web sites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr. This provides a way to get more information about the content and the photographer.
Which means that the bit I suggested above about pasting only the part enclosed by IMG tags is what they don't want you to do, so forget I ever said that. Instead, copy/paste the entire block of BBCode provided, so that the linkback to the Flickr page will be automatically included, making everyone happy. :)

I used to use ImageShack and I would personally stay away from it. Their interface sucks and they've lost/corrupted images that have been stored over time. I've moved over to PhotoBucket and it seems to work a lot better for me. Couldn't speak for or against Flickr or the others mentioned here - just do yourself a favor and stay away from ImageShack.
