Philip Madoc RIP

This seems to have gotten missed here, but Philip Madoc, one of the best-remembered recurring guest stars of the classic era (and who went on to work with Big Finish and Faction Paradox) died on Monday.

He played a number of roles (and, along with Bernard Cribbins, was one of only a handful of actors to appear in both the AARU Dr. Who films and the TV series). But The War Lord in The War Games and Solon in The Brain of Morbius are his best known.

There was a thread in the TV and Media forum about him.

For me, he'll always be the submarine commander in Dad's Army

Commander (to dozy Private Pike): 'What is it [your name]?'

Captain Mainwaring: 'Don't tell him, Pike!'

There was a thread in the TV and Media forum about him.

Fair enough but it's not the Doctor Who forum.* Thanks for the heads up anyway (heads over...)

* Actually the next time this forum is redesigned, they should look at adding subject tags so that if a topic that's relevant to the interests of multiple forums is posted, it gets crossposted. I honestly had no idea Madoc would rate a general thread since I only know him from Doctor Who.

For avoidance of doubt, I was mentioning the other thread to be helpful, not in a 'why are you posting this' way. But I think (hope) you knew that anyway. :)

That sucks I always loved seeing him on the original series and I have hoped he'd make an appearance on the new series. :(:(

A sad thing to find out indeed. I had no idea until I saw this thread that he had died. I enjoyed his work in The War Games and The Brain of Morbius. Can't say I saw any of his other performances.

Gosh, it seems like Mr. Madoc has been around forever and he's been in so much stuff on BBC and in British film. Still, he'll always be The War Lord.

I loved him as Solon and Fenner in The Power Of Kroll, but it was also cool to see him in the second Dr. Who theater movie.

RIP, Madoc. Too bad you didn't hang around so long as Michael Gough (the Celestial Toy Maker and Alfred from Batman).
