Zap2it and other media are reporting that Captain Phil Harris, one of the crab boat captains featured on Discovery's Deadliest Catch, has had a stroke while off loading his ship:

Of course had this happened to one of the contestants on Survivor or The Bachelor or any of those other so-called "realty" shows it's be top of the news. Deadliest Catch is one of the few true reality shows I watch, enjoy and - above all else - actually respect. You wouldn't think a show about a bunch of crab fishermen in the Bering Sea would actually be sustainable as a reality series not just for one season but I think they're shooting the 6th now, but they've managed to make it work. And as far as I'm concerned it's a much better show than stuff like that new one featuring the repo men or Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Unfortunately this isn't a huge surprise. As anyone who's watched the show knows, Phil had some major health problems a couple seasons ago (all caught on camera) and had to sit out part of last season too. Hopefully he'll recover from this.

They told him if he continued fishing he would have a heart attack or a stroke. This isn't a fake "reality" show, it's fishing, it sucks.

Yeah. I hope for his swift recovery, but it's not a surprise. They were always warning Phil about his health and what would happen if he persisted going at the pace he did.

Damn hope he gets better. He's not going to slow down though. He'll keep going until he dies, he's too stubborn.

Exactly. However I think his stand is he is a fisherman and he will do it until the day it kills him.

Poor man. You're right, it certainly was no surprise to anyone who watched the program. I do hope that he is being well taken care of.

Damn. I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Say what you want about him going on with fishing after his health problems, but he found something in life he loves, and is going to do it till the day he dies.

One of my favorites too. Kinda love the guy. :(

Please post any updates you might come across.

^ What they said. I haven't seen the show for a while here (:p), but I remember when he had his last major injury while out at sea. Phil might not be an exemplar of good health, but he's certainly too stubborn to just up and die one day. :D He's a fighter.

The show only has 13ish episodes a season, normally starting late February or March.

I figured he would die fishing, so it's good that he only had a stroke and isn't dead.

I have a feeling that this is caused by his bloodstream being roughly 80 percent Red Bull.

I met the man and his sons about 6 months ago (give or take) as they were on a publicity tour. He is exactly like he is on tv and so are the boys. They are genuine nice folk but when you get him tired, he gets crabby. We exchanged a few words about Capt. KJeith (rolleyes).

I wish him the best.

A [eta: former] Survivor player died just a week or so ago (although not a very prominent one), was that "top of the news" the US?

Anyway, I don't want to derail the thread.

R.I.P. Phil Harris. :(
