Phil Everly of singing duo Everly Brothers dies at 74

Rock 'n' roll singer Phil Everly, 74, died Friday in Burbank, Calif., of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, his wife, Patti Everly, told The Los Angeles Times

I was listening to their cover of "love is strange "the other day and thinking how great they were with their singing and wondering what they were up to these days. Truly one of the best vocalists of the rock 'n roll era, he and his brother were forerunners to the harmonies of Lennon/McCartney and Simon and Garfunkel.

Wow, part of a powerful musical duo, one of whom is now gone. May he rest in peace. :(

Sad news. I've always enjoy the Everly Brothers. My mother went to school with them.

Strange, I was just listening to one of their songs. Thanks for all of the great music!!

RIP Mr. Everly

In 1959 the Everly Brothers followed up their first hit album with Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, an outstanding collection of traditional country and folk standards from their neck of the woods. This was long before anything like folk-rock, country-rock, roots-rock, Americana or alt-country of course. The vision and confidence they showed by that choice has always impressed me.

I know the brothers had had their ups and downs, but it was nice to think that harmony was still possible somewhere. Now it's not. RIP, Phil Everly.

Not to take away from the talent of the Everly Brothers, but wouldn't Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and the rest if the Sun records rockabilly artists be the first Americana/Alt-country musicians?

But then it was just rock and roll. My point was, none of the new rock and roll artists had recorded much that went far back into the roots of rock and roll, and definitely not back into 19th century traditional stuff. Let alone record a whole album of it.
