Also, did that Romulan die when he got booted out of the ship? Because if he didn't, what a nightmare.

I wondered about that when it aired - did they have to breathe air? If would seem not as breathing requires constant exchange of mass with the environment and they were out of phase with that environment.
The episode established that they were hungry - so he would have starved to death at the very least.
