"David"

(This story is a spinoff of Star Trek Phase Two. With the USS Enterprise trapped in the Delta-Quadrant, this spinoff will center around the events happening back at home, on Earth.)--

Colonel Christopher Pike had been like a father figure to James T Kirk for most of the young captain’s career and life. And as the Colonel sat in the taxi-cab that traversed the streets of San Diego California, he couldn’t help but remember the day he informed Kirk’s mother that her husband, Jim’s father, George, had been killed while test flying what would one day become the shuttlecraft that became standard issue for the World Space Agency.

And while that was a somber memory, one of Pike’s most favorite memories of Jim Kirk had happened only a couple years in the past. It was the key vote as to whether or not the United States would help fund the United Space Command, now called the World Space Agency. Pike remembered Kirk’s story quiet well; and grinned as he recounted the story in his mind.

FLASH BACK BEGINS
Two years ago

Senator Mitch Williams was a married man, a rich white married man, as were most Senators who served in the United States Senate. He also had a mistress on the side, and like most senators, that was the norm too. He also had several homes that he could hide his mistress in, away from the paparazzi that hounded him. His wife knew he played around, but she didn’t care. They were both in their late 40s, and Mitch weighed nearly 250 pounds, having let himself go when he got elected to his first term twelve years earlier.

Mitch Williams was relaxed, as he was sprawled out on the comfortable lounge chair on the secluded patio of his house that over looked the Miami beech below. His mistress, Olivia Cole, an African American female, who was absolutely stunning, was topless as she applied lotion to Mitch’s ample man breasts.

Olivia looked down on the whale that was beneath her hands. That is what Mitch reminded her of, a fat whale that had washed ashore. She hated the fact that she was sleeping with a man who was, at the core, a bigot. He voted no for almost every program that would benefit the poor and others who needed help. The country had dug itself out of the depression of the early part of the century, but some, like Mitch Williams, only wanted to hold on to power. Sexually, the man was lost. He had no sensual ability. He was nothing, really, but a fat pig.

But, he paid her well. He gave her a twenty-thousand dollar a month allowance, which she used to spoil her two kids with, and save for their education. She knew enough to not tell anyone that she was a Senator’s mistress. No one knew: well, except for one person. Her big ‘brother’: James T. Kirk.

Olivia Cole and James T. Kirk had met in grade school, when they both lived in Iowa. They were never involved romantically, never at all, since meeting in grade school. Since she had no older brothers, and Kirk lived nearby, on his family farm he had been directed by his parents to watch out for Olivia, which he did. When they grew older, and went on to high school, Olivia had tried to set James up with her friend from school, a recent immigrant to America, from Africa. Her name was Nyota Uhura. But James valued Olivia’s friendship too much to allow himself to become involved with Uhura, Olivia’s best friend. But that didn’t stop the young Kirk from romancing other girls, which he did quite often.

As Olivia rubbed the lotion deep into the fat Mitch William’s arms, she smiled at him.

“After we’re done here,” Mitch said, “you know what I want you to do.”

Olivia knew what he meant. He wanted her to satisfy him sexually. But, as he closed his eyes, she looked up at the clock that adorned the nearby patio wall. It was almost time for the “show”, she reminded herself.

Earlier in the day the United States Senate voted no on the proposal to contribute more money to the United Space Agency. This had the effect of, possibly, ditching the Mars Mission, which James T. Kirk had been tapped to Command. When the vote came down, and the Mission had lost by one vote, Kirk wanted to make a statement to Mitch Williams, who had cast the deciding vote. Kirk knew of only one way.

Olivia scanned the distant horizon, where the ocean met the sky. And then she saw it, a tiny black dot, far in the distance, had dropped from the sky and was getting larger and larger as came closer and closer to the shore. She reached into her bra and took out the two tiny ear plugs that she had brought for the “show”. She continued to rub the Senator’s legs with oil as she applied the ear plugs, one at a time.

She seductively began to trace her fingers higher up on Mitch William’s massive legs. She could tell that the movement of her fingernails was having its desired effect on the Senator. And then she closed her eyes…and then….she popped the umbrella that came with the lounge chair and then…..

ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!

The following sonic boom caused every window in the house to smash apart. The house was primarily made out of glass, and in mere two seconds later glass showered down upon Olivia and Mitch. The sonic-boom also scared the daylights out of the senator, causing him to lurch out of his chair, and fall to the ground, squealing like a pig.

--

One hour later. Captain James T Kirk reported to Colonel Pike’s office, as ordered, having just landed his F-26 Saber jet moments before. Kirk was escorted into the office by the duty officer, who left and shut the door.

Pike had a large cigar in his mouth, and was his face was red with anger.

“WHAT KIND OF GOD DAMN STUNT WAS THAT!?” Pike screamed in anger.

Kirk shook his head. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, sir.”

“DON’T GIVE ME THAT CRAP!” Pike yelled. “YOU FLEW OVER THE SENATORS HOUSE AND NEARLY KILLED THAT FAT ASS WITH A HEART ATTACK!!”

Kirk held out his hands, palms up. “Colonel, I can tell you with all honesty. “ Kirk said, with his innocent blue eyes glistening, “It was instrument failure.”

“BULL@#$^%!” Pike followed up.

--
END FLASH BACK

The taxi-cab driver brought Pike out of trek down memory lane.

“Sir,” the driver said, “we’re here.”

“Coming Home”

United Nations Senator Mitch Williams sat inside the office of the President of the United Nations. The office was located inside the massive United Nations complex located in Berlin, Germany. The door to the office opened and the President Harsha Jadhav, who was also the former President of India, entered the office.

“Good to see you Senator Wiliams,” President Jadhav said as he shook hands with Williams, who had stood up in his honor.

Both men took their seats.

“Mitch, I’m pretty busy today, so let’s keep this short.” President Jadhav, “But, remember, I always have time to hear your most interesting take on events.”

Senator Williams smiled.

“You like to prove me wrong,” Williams said. “And while I am not always correct, I sure had John Gill pegged. I warned you about his activities long before the whole incident on that island of his.”

“But other times you have been wrong. And yes,” Jadhav said with his own smile, “that is part of the attraction to our relationship; when you are wrong. Now listen Mitch, if this visit of yours is some last attempt to talk me out of signing the documents that will have Earth join the United Federation of Planets later today; then your visit is a waste of time; I’ve already made up my mind.” Jahdav said. “And if I may be so bold, the people of this world are, by a large margin, in favor of it.”

Williams, who lit up a cigarette, while looking at the no-smoking sign on the far wall of the office, shook his head.

“Mr. President,” Williams said, “I still am against our joining the Federation, for reasons or sovereignty you are well aware of, but that is not why I am here. I am here because of a piece of information I became aware of earlier today.”

“And what would that information be?” President Jadhav asked pointedly, though he already had an inkling to what it was.

“I have it on good authority,” Williams began to say, “that the Ambassador from Vulcan, Sarek, has asked you to entertain the possibility of allowing the surviving Romulan population to relocate here; on Earth.”

President Jadhav took a deep breath. He had hoped this idea would have been kept quiet while he discussed the matter with the Federation. But that was not to be the case.

“It’s true, I have been asked about such a possibility.” Jadhav finally admitted.

“Certainly,” Williams insisted, “your answer will be absolutely not.”

“To be honest,” Jadhav said, “I have not given them an answer yet.”

“Look,” Senator Williams said, “despite our difference of opinions on many subjects, I consider you a friend Mr. President. But you can not seriously be considering Sarek’s request. The Romulans nearly took over Sarek’s own world, Vulcan, five hundred years ago. Where does he get off even asking that of us, and more importantly, what makes you think the Romulans wouldn’t try that sort of thing here?”

“The difference,” Jadhav stated flatly, “is that the Romulans originally came from Earth. They descend from humans that were taken from Earth, and now they want to come back home because their adopted world has been destroyed. And besides, we’re not talking about a large population at all. At best it would be no more than two or three hundred thousand. So, I don’t really recognize the threat they post. And let’s not forget; they are far more advanced in term of technology, and medicine, than we are. It would give us an instant boost in those areas. ”

“Letting the Romulans return to Earth,” Williams replied in a somber tone, “is an absolute risk. I hope you at least let the people of Earth debate this prospect before you commit us to this idea.”

Jadhav nodded his head.

“I will,” Jadhav said. “The Federation will not make us take the Romulans in, if we decide not to take them in. The Romulans are not even part of the Federation. But before you close the door to that possibility, remember this; there are forces out there in our galactic neighborhood that are far more powerful than a couple hundred thousand or so Romulans. I understand the risks taking them in, but I can’t discount the leaps and bounds we might make with them here, further preparing our selves as we begin to explore the galaxy; discovering both the good and bad of it.”

Williams took in a deep inhale of his cigarette before continuing.

“That all sounds wonderful, and very poetic,” Williams said to President Jadhav. “But don’t forget; the Enterprise is lost to us because of a lone Romulan tampering with our society over a hundred years ago. Just think about the effects two-hundred thousand of them will have on our society. People love to romanticize the Roman legend. Why do you think that is?”

“The Romans represent the broad range of success and failure that a society can attain.”

“That is part of it,” Williams said. “However, I compare them to the dinosaurs. As kids, and even as adults, we love the dinosaurs. They were very powerful and beautiful beasts, to be sure. But they also dominated this world and were quite savage, and if you were alive when they were; it wouldn’t be so rosy a feeling. The Romans are the same way. But put them in our time? And with that drive of theirs to be the dominant force in the world? It’s like playing with fire; I hope you remember that.”

Jadhav had no reply as Senator Mitch Williams stood, shook hands with him, turned and left. President Jadhav sat alone and pondered the Senator’s words very carefully. The man had a point, Jadhav concluded. And it was a very good one indeed.

“Moving Forward”

Archer Island;
An artificial Island built off the coast of Daytona Beach Florida.
Headquarters of the United Space Agency of Earth.

Colonel Pike sat in his office with a glass of wine at his side, alone, and looked through the several video scrapbooks representing the various cadet classes that had come through under his watch, during both his tenure in NASA and now as part of the United Space Agency.

There were many faces he remembered quite well, as he fanned through the video pages looking at each class. He was taking this time to walk down memory lane because, just as NASA became the United Space Agency of Earth, the United Space Agency of Earth was now becoming part of the United Federation of Planet’s Starfleet Command. And because of Earth’s strategic place in the galaxy, the Federation had decided to make Earth the headquarters of Starfleet. The Federation’s Starfleet Command was also very impressed with the structure of Earth’s space program, and decided to let Earth gradually take control of the structure of Starfleet Command. For, as it turned out, Earth, even as the newest member of the Federation, was probably the most military minded. This served two functions; it gave Earth stature in the Federation, but also made Earth a target if any protagonist should become a viable threat.

To that end, Archer Island was closing down. Due to strategic reasons, Earth’s new Starfleet Command was being constructed in San Francisco with advanced Vulcan and Romulan technology. Archer Island, with all its rich NASA history, and recent United Space Agency history, was to be re-configured as a possible new home to Romulan refugees.

The United Nation Senate had taken up debate on that matter for several days, and the idea to let the Romulans settle on Archer Island was gaining steam. The people of Earth, by nearly 70%, saw this as a good will gesture on Earth’s part as it became a galactic neighbor. Sarek, and the rest of the Federation, was genuinely impressed with that fact. A vocal minority, led by Senator Mitch Williams, was against this idea. However, thanks to the unique friendship between Senator Williams and United Nations President, and now Earth’s representative to the Federation, Harsh Jadhav, those opposed to the idea would temper judgment for two years, so as to give the idea a chance.

Being the soldier he was Pike didn’t really care either way. But over the past several weeks he had become more than just an acquaintance of Sarek’s; they had become friends. Sarek really sold Pike on the idea of Starfleet, and that Earth would be protected by any Romulan ambition. And, Pike had to admit, the Romulans, as they segued into Earth society, would help bring Earth up to speed with the other galactic powers in terms of technology.

The doors to Pike’s office opened and Sarek entered, along with his beautiful Romulan wife Amanda. Commander Spock, their son and first officer onboard the Enterprise, was lost in the Delta-Quadrant along with the rest of the crew of the Enterprise. Pike, being as close as he was to Jim Kirk, felt as if he had lost a son; Sarek and Amanda really had lost their son. On that level they shared much.

Pike, and his wife Candice, had invited Sarek and Amanda to stay at their guest house in the Hamptons, while the new Federation complex was being built just outside Paris France. The Presidency of the Federation rotated every eight years, and as it happened to be, the newest member world’s representative, Harsha Jadhav in this case, would take over the Presidency in just over a year. While this kind of rotation might seem odd, Sarek explained to Pike that it was the surest way to prove that the Federation was always opened to new ideas and cultures. Pike thought it was a bit naïve, but who was he to argue with a 100 year old Vulcan?

“Colonel Pike,” Sarek said as he and his wife came into his office, “I can see why your wife complains that she never gets to see you.”

“Sarek of Vulcan,” Amanda said, “It is not logical to bring such matters to discussion when you yourself spend far too much of your time off world.”

Sarek tried to respond, but couldn’t. Pike smiled at seeing the Vulcan at a loss for words.

“I think she has you there,” Pike said. “Besides, the clean up crew will be here tomorrow and I wanted to make sure I packed up my personal effects before they get here.”

“That is logical,” Sarek allowed. “Just before we got to your office, we met the young man Dr. Daystrom was talking with in his office.”

“Reginald Barkley,” Pike responded. “You wouldn’t know it by looking at him, but here, on Earth, he is perhaps one of the most brilliant men ever when it comes to physics. With all due respect to the Vulcan Science Academy, which your son has told me much about, this guy Barkley is brilliant too.”

“Yes,” Sarek said, “I overheard his discussion with Dr. Daystrom. The two of them are heading to Vulcan in the morning to work with the Science Academy on finding away to not only locate the Enterprise, but also in finding away to bring the starship home.”

“You miss your son,” Amanda stuck in real quick. “I can hear it in your voice.”

Sarek flashed Amanda an annoyed look.

“My dear wife,” Sarek said, “I do not miss Spock. I accept his absence as the result of living in an archaic universe that one can not always decode with mathematical equations.”

Amanda smiled, “Very well, my husband.”

She looked to Pike, and Pike could tell she did not believe Sarek; entirely.

As Pike packed up his scrapbooks, and Sarek and Amanda continued their conversation, something very strange was happening right below their feet, figuratively.

“Trelane”

Earth
Archer Island

Colonel Christopher Pike stood at the entrance of his nearly abandoned office. His desk, a gift from his mentor Robert April, had already been taken during the short time he had dined with Sarek and Amanda. Only a few boxes remained, and because of the recent loss of the Enterprise, the files pertaining to the Enterprise, including the crew manifest, were left out. Pike had already notified most of the family and close friends of the ship’s crew, lost somewhere on the other side of the galaxy.

This night would be the last night Pike would be in his soon to be former office. Many memories had been made, both good and bad, in the office. But, along with the rest of the United Space Agency, he was now being shifted into the Federation's Starfleet Command.

But before he left for the last time, he needed to do some final administrative actions pertaining to the Enterprise crew. But before doing so, Pike decided to head back to the cafeteria one last time and get himself a strong pot of coffee to help keep from falling asleep while reviewing the files.

Pike headed out of his office and down the hallway. But just as before, before he had returned to his officer after eating dinner with Sarek and Amanda, Pike had a strange feeling that he was being watched. He entered the elevator and pressed the button that would take him away from the floor he was on.

Pike exited the elevator just one floor up instead of the five floors up where the cafeteria was. Pike’s instincts told him that he had a visitor, an unwanted visitor, in his office. He made his way down the emergency stairway. He walked as quietly as possible. Finally exiting on the right floor, Pike quietly made his way down the hallway. Without skipping a beat, Pike burst into his office. And sure enough a stranger was there, holding and looking at the Enterprise manifest

“You,” Pike said the teenager he found, “you’re just a boy.”

Pike was indeed right; the stranger who had broken into Pike’s office appeared to be no more than fifteen or sixteen years old. He wore blue jeans, and a black leather Jacket, and had an arrogant look to match his golden blond hair.

“I am no mere teenager, I assure you.” The boy said.

“Alright, for now I will accept that as fact.” Pike said with a smile, not wanting to cause the boy to panic. “Do you mind telling me just who you are and why you are in my office?”

“My name is Trelane,” the boy said with an air of arrogance in his voice. “I am not accustomed to being questioned in this manner by a mere mortal.”

“Is that so?” Pike asked.

“Indeed so,” Treland said. “Should I be so inclined I could remove you from this dreary life of yours and there would be nothing you could do about it.”

The boy seemed normal enough, but somehow someway, Pike knew there was indeed something unique about the him.

“Okay,” Pike said, “So you are a power God like entity. But if that is the case then why do you need to sneak around my office?”

“Even a God, as I will be someday, has limits.” Trelane said with obvious annoyance in his voice. “Those of my kind first have to be chronologists, which is both good and bad for me, you, and,” Treylane said as he held up the cover of the Enterprise’s manifest, "them."

The tone of the conversation became serious.

“What do you mean by that?” Pike asked.

“Colonel Pike, I would normally have the ability to bring your little lost toy in the Delta-Quadrant home with just the snap of my finger. But since this a trial that even I must endure, I can not. My vessel can make the trip in, oh, ten of your seconds.” Trelane said with a snide smile on his face.

“Then why don’t you take as many trips as you can and bring my friends home?” Pike asked in a serious tone.

“There are rules,” Trelane said, “that even I must follow. One such rule is that I can not undo the actions of another one of my kind.”

“Gary Mitchell?” Pike asked.

“The being you know as Gary Mitchell has put into motion a series of events that will, believe it or not, shape the history of the entire galaxy.” Trelane said in all seriousness. “I, in my humble way, get to record these events. However, my information about you humans is very scant. Not too long ago, one of the people on your precious lost ship died; his name was Hikaru Sulu I believe, and so that is why I came here to get something like this.” Trelane said, holding the manifest.

“Sulu is dead?” Pike asked in a slight tone of anger.

“Yes,” Trelane said. “How it happened, why it happened, who did it? These are all question that both you, and Captain Kirk I might add, would like to know. But, as I said before, I can not interfere; I can only watch and record as is my task through all of this. Hopefully, when it this is all done, I will have passed this part of my test and be allowed to become truly part of the Continuum.”

“That’s all fine and dandy,” Pike said, “but these are people on that ship. They are not toys in some game between the Gods. Some of them have family, children even, who want so much to see them again. Why make them go through this?”

“I like that,” Trelane said to Pike, “I really like the Game between Gods motif you suggested. It sort of has an air of regality, like I do; don’t you think?”

So much was happening, and for all Pike knew, the kid was a raging lunatic. But almost instinctively he felt as if the boy was being truthful, and arrogant, at the same time.

“Bring them home,” Pike insisted, “now.”

Trelane shook his head.

“I’m sorry Colonel Pike,”

“Attack: Trelane-part one”
Special guest stars
Captain James T Kirk and
Commander Spock from “Star Trek Phase Two-The Voyage Home”

Previously

Trelane, seeing Kirk and Spock coming towards them, looked to Pike.

“I have to leave you now; Colonel Pike. It is not my time yet to meet your dashing hero named Captain James T Kirk.” Trelane said. “You have ten of your Earth minutes to say what you must, and then its back to Earth for you. So make it snappy my good fellow.”

And just as Kirk and Spock came running up to Pike and Trelane, Trelane smiled at Kirk, snapped his fingers, and vanished.

“Chris,” Kirk said, short of breath. “Is that really you?”

“Yes,” Chris said as the two friends shook hands.

-our story continues-

“Who was that with you? Kirk asked.

“Oh, his name is Trelane,” Pike told Kirk. “Apparently he is a being not unlike our own Gary Mitchell.”

“Can he bring us home?” Kirk asked.

“If I take him at his word; no, not now at least. He just appeared in my office and I found him looking at the Enterprise manifest.” Pike said. “Getting him to even bring me here was hard enough. We only have ten minutes, so enough about him. What about Sulu and the rest of the crew?”

“He’s dead,” Spock replied. “We are only just now starting our investigation. While it may seem at this point to be accidental, we can not locate the two crewmembers who were with him earlier this day. There has been a cave in which may explain a great deal.”

“Damn, such a waste. So, “ Pike said as he took in his surroundings, “Just where are we?” Pike asked.

Spock answered the Colonel.

“We are in the Delta-0005A108 star system, on the forth planet from the Sun. A Vulcan probe studied this part of the Delta-Quadrant fifty years ago. There was no sign of sentient life. However, that probe’s mission was quite limited I must admit.” Spock replied.

“And to make a long story short,” Kirk added, “we have been here for five days. I only authorized shore leave two days ago, and then this happened.”

Pike could sense the tension that Kirk was putting off.

“Look Jim,” Pike told his once young protégé, “I know this isn’t the greatest turn of events.” Pike said. “But I know of no better starship captain to see this crew through this.”

“What happened to Romulas?” Kirk asked.

“Romulas was destroyed by the VGR anomaly, but the President of the United Nations has offered to let the last survivors of Romulas to settle on Earth; on of all places Archer Island. Incidentally, Mister Spock, your father is alive and well. In fact, I just dined with him last night.”

“I appreciate your telling me this information Colonel Pike.” Spock said.

“So I take it we joined the Federation,” Kirk deduced, “and the move to San Francisco is going forward.”

“Listen to me,” Pike said seeing the slight dismissive look in Kirk’s eye, “we have our best minds, and the Vulcans as well, working on this. Sarek,” Pike said to Spock, “is trying his hardest to martial the best minds in the Federation. We even have none other than Reginald Barkley working it as well.”

“Most impressive,” Spock said. “Even my world is quite versed in the mathematical mind of Dr. Barkley.”

“And don’t worry about David,” Pike assured Kirk. “Caroline and Mark are going to take great care of little David until you return.”

Kirk looked at Pike with cold eyes.

“I’ll be nearly a hundred and twenty years old, he’ll be eighty, until I see him again.” Kirk said. "And what about all the others who left children and loved ones behind."

“You're just going to have to get through this, and I know you will.” Pike replied.

“The colonel is right Captain,” Spock said. “In the span of one week we have come into contact with two beings with the ability to move across the galaxy in merely a wink of an eye. For all we know, there may be other encounters in our future.”

"Your father would find your inspirational words quite interesting Mister Spock." Pike added with a knowing smile.

"And I am sure, quite logical as well." Spock added.

Pike began to fade.

“Looks like this is it, time for me to go Jim.” Pike said to Kirk. “Take care my friend; and have hope. We will do our best on our end to bring you back, or at least to communicate.”

Pike faded and Kirk waved goodbye as Spock also offered the Vulcan hand salute.

And with that, Pike was gone.

Pike reappeared on Trelane’s ship.

“Sorry to cut your visit short Christopher,” Trelane said, “but even a God’s mercy has its limits.” He added with a smile.

“The human mind and ability,” Pike said to Trelane, “will amaze you.”

“We’ll see,” Trelane said, “we’ll see. I will have the good fortune of meeting your Captain Kirk in due time. It will be glorious. I think I will appear to him as; a woman.” Trelane added with a smile.

Pike’s face almost went green

Admiral Cartwright stared at the tactical read out that adorned the massive wall inside the new Starfleet Command Headquarters in San Francisco. It was centered at an area above Earth.

“So,” Cartwright said to the gathered military experts who stood, “we are quite certain we can detect the UFO should it return with Captain Pike?”

“Yes sir,” Commodore Robau replied.

“It’s a good thing Pike had his transponder so we could locate him upon his instant return,” Pike said.

“What do you want us to do when it appears.” Robau asked, while his hands glided across the tactical weapons consol.

Cartwright looked right at Robau.

“I want you to bring the Colonel home; at all cost!” Cartwright said, as he slammed his fist down on the large display next to his desk.

(we last saw Pike and Trelane in the Delta-Quadrant. Pike was able to converse with Captain Kirk and Mister Spock, but is now being taken back to Earth by Trelane)

Colonel Christopher Pike had learned very early in his military life to observe all that was observable. And as he sat in Trelane’s ship, swapping banter with the very powerful being that Trelane was, Pike had observed a few interesting details.

First off; it was taking far longer to return to Earth than it did from going to the Delta-Quadrant, which had only taken ten seconds. Which either meant Trelane was just taking his time, or, Pike thought, there was some event, which Trelane didn’t care to alert Pike of, that was causing them to take longer to return to Earth.

Trelane was going on and on, which he seemed to love to do, about how the lower life forms of the universe, humanity among them, were like children. And how the higher life forms, including himself, were obliged to nourish with the care and temperament that only a God could provide. Pike could only roll his eyes as he listened. Yet again, Trelane was pretty powerful. He had the ability, or at least his ship did, to travel the galaxy at extreme speeds. There was no telling what else Trelane, or others like him, including Gary Mitchell, could do.

Both Trelane and Pike were eating from a bowl of apples, which had been provided by the simple snap of Trelanes fingers, and then Trelane suddenly decided to change the subject. The tone became a little more serious as well.

“You have no doubt wondered why our trip back to Earth is taking a little longer than I had hoped,” Trelane said as he chewed on his apple. “I’ll get to that in a moment, but, please Colonel, take a look outside the window; I want you to see something.” Trelane said as he took a bit out of his apple.

Pike looked out the window and was unprepared for what he saw. Several large, very large, cone-shaped objects in space were discharging some kind of beam at a planet. The beams were literally slicing up the planet. It was the most awesome, and horrifying display of wanton power, Pike had ever seen. And in the distance, nearly as black as space itself, was a large cube shaped object that just sat there; as though it was observing the destruction of the planet for no other reason than just to observe. The size of the cube shaped object was un-measurable, but clearly on the order of a large mountain on Earth.

“What is going on here?” Pike asked, in a whisper. As if he was trying to make sure that what ever those things were, wouldn’t hear him.

Trelane came over to the window, and like a child, looked out the window in total awe of what they were seeing. Chunks of the planet had now been blasted away from the planet, and a few of the long, cone shaped objects, were using what appeared to be tractor beams, unseen energy forces that pulled chunks of the planet into their large unmoving mauls; as if they were, for lack of a better term, eating them for fuel. Trelane took a big bite out of his apple.

“Wasn’t that just incredible Colonel Pike?” Trelane asked excitedly. “Oh, look at that one!” Trelane pointed at another chunk of the planet as it was obliterated by the devices. “Don’t worry my good sir,” Trelane said to Pike. “I assure that we are completely safe. But I can’t help but stop and see something like this happened; it is exciting don’t you think?”

“I noticed there was water on that planet,” Pike said. “Was there any life?”

Trelane thought for a moment.

“Yes,” Trelane said, “I believe so. It was a humanoid species, much like your own, which had a population of over five billion. Their technology level wasn’t quite up to your level, but there must have been some kind of value to it.”

“What do you mean by that? What do you mean by value?” Pike asked, in a cold manner.

“Well,” Trelane said, “the Borg just don’t go around the universe destroying every race they come across. They only assimilate those who offer them some kind of value.”

“I have heard of the Borg,” Pike said. Pike looked out the window at the carnage of the destroyed world. “You’ve got the power of a God, so why didn’t you stop them?” Pike asked, feeling sorrow for the massive loss of life.

“Why would I?” Trelane replied. “It’s the order of the universe. I am no different than the humans who observe nature on your world, and allow the natural death of animals, not lifting a finger when the deer is torn apart by the wolf.”

“It’s not the same thing,” Pike said.

“Life is life,” Trelane said. “And as for the reason we are taking our time to return to your world? Well, it would seem as though one of your minions, Admiral Cartwright I think is his name, along with his trained minions, are planning to attack my ship upon our arrival. I want them to be totally prepared, so they can do their best.”

“And you know this? How is that possible?” Pike asked.

“How Do I know? Colonel Pike; does the phrase all knowing mean anything to you?” Trelane asked.

At that instant, Trelane snapped his fingers and gone were his leather jacket and blue jeans. In their place was a uniform just like Pikes’, a Colonel’s uniform no less.

“What are you doing?” Pike asked.

“I will be taking my leave from you very shortly,” Trelane said as he put his apple core in the discard bowl, and then stood up. “I just want to know that our paths will cross again. And when they do, I will be wearing this uniform as well, so as to show you, that from this time forward I will no longer act like a child; but as your equal.”

“What about the Enterprise? Why don’t you bring her hom?” Pike asked.

“Gary Mitchell, as I told you earlier,” Trelane said, “has set forth a chain of events that will involve the Enterprise, you, and,” Trelane said pointing at the window, “the Borg. If I were you, I would prepare your people for the day they are assimilated by the Borg. I hate to be a sourpuss, Colonel, but right now, it doesn’t look good for you.”

--

At that moment Trelane’s ship appeared high in Earth Orbit, just where it had been earlier. It was also surrounded by several starships and other Earth defense forces. Trelane snapped his fingers and Pike suddenly found himself in the main tactical control center at the new Starfleet Command on Earth.

Admiral Cartwright was stunned to see him.

“Pike has made it off that ship,” Cartwright said to the tactical staff, “open fire; now!”

(we last saw Pike and Trelane in the Delta-Quadrant. Pike was able to converse with Captain Kirk and Mister Spock, but is now being taken back to Earth by Trelane)

Welcome Wagon

The large Romulan Fleet entered orbit of Earth. Nearly three-hundred vessels of various sizes had finally arrived at Earth, including nearly fifty of the very large, and powerful, Warbirds. Although the people of Earth had, for the most part, supported letting the Romulans settle on Earth after the destruction of their own world (***), there was still an uneasy feeling as the large fleet arrived. It was abundantly clear that the Romulan fleet was far superior to fleet of Earth. Several hundred transport vessels would also be arriving in the coming days, ferrying nearly three-hundred thousand Romulan men, women and children to Earth.

The Romulans could have relocated to an unpopulated planet. But for cultural reasons, and after discussions with Earth leaders, it was decided to try an integrate the two societies, for better or worse, once again. But as the Romulan fleet arrived, the gravity of that decision finally began to take hold.

Earth’s own Space Fleet, which was still very small, would have been no match for the Romulan fleet, had the Romulans wanted to attack Earth. Federation Ambassador Sarek’s assurances that the Federation would provide support for the endeavor went along way to ease the situation. Sarek had become, in recent months, the face of the “Federation”, which Earth was now a member of. To that end, Andorian-Vulcan-the newly admitted Gorn-had committed ships to accompany the Romulan fleet to Earth; and now they had arrived. The last of the Romulan civilization had now agreed to join the Federation as well, a prerequisite for migrating to Earth.

Colonel Pike, Ambassador Spock, and Earth’s own President, Harsh Jadhav, stood atop the new Federation complex which had been built just miles from the Eiffel Tower. The setting sun provided a beautiful red dusk welcome to the coming Romulans. Most of the media outlets on Earth had news teams covering the event as well. Helicopters, and other small aircraft, were kept at a safe distance.

Atop the building, the entire media throng was kept behind security ropes that had been situated around the roof of the Federation complex.

Everyone watched on a large screen, which had been situated on the roof of the complex, as the Romulan fleet entered Earth orbit. Soon everyone on the roof of the complex turned their eyes to the sky as the Romulan shuttle, which like all Romulan vessels paid homage to birds, came down from out of nearly clear sky, which was dotted with a few clouds, and landed upon the top of the Federation complex. Aboard the shuttle was the newly empowered leader of the Romulan people, who they referred to as their Praetor; which caused much trepidation with the Earth population. The history of the Roman Empire, of which the Romulans had a direct connection to, was well known to the Earth’s population. Many of Earth’s cultures had passed down stories, legends, of the Romans; many of those myths were not of a pleasant variety. It was as if one of Earth’s greatest dynasties of the past had been brought back to life. What did that mean, and would the future hold? No one could know.

As the Earth delegation prepared to welcome the Romulans, what appeared to be an innocent puddle of water, near the far end of the roof-top, was more than just a mere collection of H20 particles. For what appeared to be just a puddle of water had arrived on Earth nearly a hundred-fifty years in the past, monitoring the evolution of mankind and his society. And even though the puddle of water could, at any moment, change shape; for now it just decided to monitor this historic moment in Earth’s history.

The Romulan shuttle landed, and moments later the doors to the craft opened. All over Earth, in every city, in every nation, the population of Earth watched this historic moment in Earth history. In just two short years, Earth had gone from being a world ignorant in the size of the Galactic neighborhood, to now becoming the center of a major event in Galactic terms.

But there were some humans who didn’t like this turn of events, and one such person was John Gill. He had been a thorn in the United Space Agency’s side for decades, and was unable to thwart Earth’s peaceful ascension into space. He, and he was not alone, held philosophical beliefs that mankind was destined, by God, or Gods, to rule the heavens. And that alien visitors were pawns of evil, and had to be stopped. Gill had even tried to infiltrate and destroy Earth’s colonizing of space, but due to betrayal (Khan), it was not to have been.

After an asteroid fragment had hit his island lair (Gary Mitchell’s did this, as I am sure you readers recall), it was thought that John Gill had been killed, along with most who believed as he did, and had moved to the now destroyed island. But unknown to even his most closet advisors, and friends, Gill had, with the help of a gifted scientist named Roger Corby, achieved what could only be described as a form of immortality. Corby had perfected the ability to create life-like androids, and the ability to exchange synaptic function between a human and the matrix mind of an Android. The android, the spitting image of Gill, was kept safe, and hidden, at Gill’s secret retreat in Montana. And, moments before the asteroid hit his lair off the coast of Australia, Gill had his memory transferred to his life-like android. So now he was no longer a man; he was a machine. He was now a machine which contained the sum knowledge, and personality, of John Gill.

Gill and Corby watched on the monitor, deep beneath Gill’s Montana retreat, the Romulan shuttle land atop the Federation complex. Gill was against the Romulan’s coming to Earth, and settling on Archer Island. But, for now, he had to stay out of sight. At a time of his choice, he would implement his new plan for thwarting alien influence on Earth, and what he perceived, as a threat to God’s law. And as Gill watched the door to the Romulan shuttle, and the Romulan Praetor step out of the shuttle, Gill looked back at the man-sized glass case that held the next piece of his plan; an android in the perfect image of the face of the Federation; Sarek.

“When do you want Sarek to come on line?” Corby asked, as he saw Gill staring at the motionless android in the case.

“In time,” Gill said with a smile. “I have learned, after the fiasco with Khan, that I must measure my actions. Time; is on my side.” Gill said after a pause.

--
The Romulan Praetor, an old, but very stern looking man named Dran’asies, flanked by his own military representative, a female, who was very stern looking as well, named Legionis Nor’vra, stepped out of the Romulan shuttle.

Wonderful World

The population of Earth watched as the President of the United Nations, Harsh Jadhav of India, reached out his hand and welcomed the Praetor and his military attaché. There was a collective sigh as the Romulans returned with the gesture used in common in the ancient world, but became the scorn of more modern times as well due to it being used by the Nazis as well.

Colonel Pike marveled at the President’s ability to let that gesture slide by, and engaged in a welcoming tone instead. But Pike would file the incident in his own mind. Pike believed that the Romulans, before coming to Earth, had to have studied up on Earth history before coming to this world. Pike found it hard to believe the gesture was given by pure chance, and more importantly, in the atmosphere of friendship.

“I hope,” President Jadhav said to the Romulan Praetor, Dran’asies, in a friendly tone, “the island retreat that will be your home will meet to your standards.”

Dran’asies seemed unimpressed, and outright snide, in his demeanor. “I will be genuinely impressed, and surprised, if that is indeed the truth.”

Federation Ambassador Sarek, picking up on the tone, took the opportunity to inject himself into the ceremony.

“Your people,” Sarek told Dran’asies, “have endured a most grave event.”

“We have,” Legionis Nor’vra said to Sarek and Jadhav, “However, do not concern your selves with our well being,” she added. “The Romulan nature scorns such acts of sheer pity.”

“I will remember that,” Colonel Pike added.

“That is wise,” Nor’vra said, pointedly, to Pike, as she eyed the military rankings on his uniform.

President Jadhav led them all into a large dining era where several dozen dignitaries from around Earth, from the Federation, and from the Romulan delegation as well, accepted them. The doors to the dining hall were closed to guarantee privacy, away from the media and press, which had come from all quarters of the Federation to mark the historic return of the Romulans to Earth.

Earth
Starfleet Command
San Francisco

Starfleet Medical, which was located near the massive Starfleet Complex in San Francisco Bay, was itself, a very large building. With the Romulans settling on the other side of North America, off the coast of Florida and on Archer Island, which had been renamed by the Romulans as Mn’aeha, Starfleet Medical, under and agreement with the Romulans, would inoculate the visitors with the medicines needed to protect both populations from disease. Even though the Romulans were descendants of Earth’s Roman Empire, they’ had been away from Earth’s environment long enough to require such measures. Heading up medical indoctrination of the Romulans was the Surgeon General of Earth’s Medical Command, Beverly Crusher. It was a massive undertaking. But it didn’t take her away from another responsibility she had been asked to undertake; the medical care of David Marcus.

Only a select few people knew the unique nature of Jim Kirk’s son; David Marcus. The child’s mother, Carol Marcus, had been murdered by a man working for John Gill. And then, along with everyone else on Gill’s island lair, young David Marcus was killed when an asteroid fragment, directed by Gary Mitchell, smashed into the island, an event that was now over a year in the past. (***)

A few months after that event, Gary Mitchell, who had become a God like being, visited Jim Kirk one last time, as the Enterprise was about to make first contact with the planet Vulcan. And as a parting gift for Kirk, and out of friendship, Mitchell snapped his fingers and brought David Marcus back into reality, and back into Kirk’s arms. Kirk, knowing that he was unprepared to be a real father to the child, followed Colonel Pike’s advice and let Pike’s sister, Caroline, and her husband, Mark Andrews, raise the young child until the day came with Kirk was ready to be a father.
Due to David’s unique circumstances, Colonel Pike wanted Starfleet Medical, and as a personal favor, the Surgeon General herself, Beverly Crusher, to see to the care of the young child.

David was placed inside a room with other kids so that Beverly could consult with Caroline and Mark Andrews. Beverly came into her office and greeted the two of them.

“Thank you for bringing David to his appointment,” Beverly said as she walked over to the large one-way window that looked out into the play area where David and the other children were playing. Caroline and Mark stood with her and watched David interact with the other children.

“Thank you for taking the time to see him,” Caroline said. “James would be so pleased to know that his son was being cared for in such a special way.”

“David is a very unique boy,” Beverly said as the all sat down around Bev’s desk. “According to our best tests, David is well with-in the norm of his physical development. However, we ran some simple mental tests about a half-hour ago and,” Beverly said, “and we scanned his brain function in the process.”

“What did you find?” Mark asked.

“Nothing to be worried about, yet,” Beverly said, “but we are seeing his brain using an area of the brain that, up to now, is very rarely used by humans.”

“What does that mean?” Caroline asked.

“What it means, simply, is that David is what we call, and pardon the term if it worries you, but we call them Metahumans.”
“What the hell is a Metahuman?” Mark asked, pointedly.

Beverly thought for a moment, before continuing.

“Every so often,” Beverly said, “a human is born with attributes that normal science can not explain. There is a child in France who also shares the ability that David does in that he uses the same unique area of the brain.”

“So,” Caroline said, “are you saying this boy in France is some kind of freak, and can fly or shoot lasers out of his eyes? And David will be doing this too?” Caroline asked in a nervous manner, her hand shaking slightly.

“No,” Beverly responded softly. “The boy in France is not a freak, nor is David. However, this boy in France, he’s five years old by the way, has ESP numbers off the charts. And,” Beverly added, “he has shown a limited ability to manipulate objects with his mind; a telekinetic if you will.”

“Oh my God,” Mark said under his breath. “He is a freak then.”

Curious Leadership

Author’s note; Just as a reminder, the Romulans in this Star Trek Universe actually are descendants of Romans. The Vulcans, who were already on ancient Earth studying us, decided to transplant ten-thousand Romans off of Earth because the Vulcan’s believed Earth faced destruction from an approaching comet. Luckily, the destruction of Earth did not happen. But the ten-thousand Romans, who were settled on Vulcan, remained there. Five hundred years later, due to their ambition, the Romans tried to conquer Vulcan, and eventually fled into space and founded what would become the Romulan Empire. In recent story events, Romulas was destroyed by the V’GR probe. Only three-hundred thousand Romulans remain, and have accepted an offer to settle on Earth.

A book was opened, and was presently on a page that showed the image of Abraham Lincoln. It was one of last photographs taken of him, just days before he was gunned down at Ford’s Theatre on April 14, 1865. Lincoln was sitting in a chair, with a peaceful calm to his face, as the Civil War had ended, and a great burden on his shoulders had been lifted.

Most American children learned the story of Abraham Lincoln at very young ages. By the time American children entered the first grade they knew he was on the five-dollar billed and had “freed the slaves”. Many of the American Presidents that followed Lincoln would name him as their inspiration.

In the current year of 2056, and as the world had become united, Lincoln was not only considered a great American leader, but as one of the greatest world leaders ever to have lived as well. A large book that rated the fifty greatest leaders of the world had recently been published. Each of the fifty great rulers was given their own chapter, with accompanying pictures, and or art, depicting them. The Romulan Praetor, Curio, had concentrated much of his reading on Lincoln. The large book was open on Lincoln’s chapter, as it had been, for nearly two entire days. Curio looked up from the book as the doosr to his office opened and Legionis Nor’vra, in all her military glory, which did not go un-noticed by Curio, entered. Nor’vra was Curio’s chief military advisor and, at times, a lover as well.

Curio’s sexual appetite was well known, even when he was a lowly Senator. He was known to share the bed of women, and men alike, but despite his larger than life persona, the public now saw him as being one of the last connections to the loss glory of the Romulan Empire, after the recent destruction of Romulas. Curio was seen as their last hope.

“You summoned me,” Nor’vra said, “I came as soon as I can.”

The Praetor stood from the chair behind his massive desk, and motioned for Nor’vra to follow him. He opened the door, which led out to the massive balcony. The two walked out on to the balcony which offered a grand view of what had been Archer Island, but was now the new capital of what was left of the Romulan Empire; Mn’aeha. To be sure, it wasn’t much of an Empire any longer. The VGR incident had left Romulas utterly destroyed. What had been a population of nearly five-billion Romulans had been left with barely three-hundred thousand. And the world they were on, Earth, wasn’t quite their own world either; the Romulans were for all intents and purposes, refugees. However Curio, the newly elected Praetor, would not let the Romulan ambition rest there, and the surviving Romulans knew this.

In the distance, from the balcony, Curio and Nor’vra could see the massive cranes, and other Federation technologies, reshaping the landscape of the Island. With esthetic input from him, Curio, and images of the great cities on Romulas to use as templates, Mn’aeha was being transformed into, what for now, would act as the center of the Romulan Empire. Curio had gone through great lengths to assured the Federation, which they had joined, and the Earth President as well, Harsh Jadhav, that the Romulans would peacefully co-exist with their Earth hosts.

However, there were simple facts that could not be denied. The Romulan’s blood enemies, chiefly the Klingon Empire, would no doubt use the Romulan current state of affairs to conquer the area of space that had been the Romulan Empire. The Klingons, who were not enemies of the Federation, but not pure allies either, were not to be trusted, at least in the Romulan point of view. The Federation had very shrewdly balanced the two, the Romulan and Klingon Empires, against each other in recent times. But with bulk of the Romulan military destroyed by VGR, the Romulans were not a threat to the Klingons; for now at least. Curio was quite sure that the Klingons would become an even greater threat with out the balance of the Romulan military to hold them in check. Convincing the Federation of this fact, and chiefly Ambassador Sarek, would be problematic at best.

“You can see the entire city from this balcony,” Legionis Nor’vra offered.

“How are our people?” Curio asked.

“The Romulan people are strong, my lord.” Nor’vra said, in her strong but feminine way. “The living conditions, for now, are a trial to be sure. However, I can assure you that the engineering teams are working without delay to finish the construction plans that you and the Senate approved.”

The Forward Pass

John Gill watched the un-ending media coverage of the Romulans, and their occupation of what had once been Archer Island. There were continual loops of arriving Romulans shuttles, and large cranes hard at work on the island home of the Romulans. Gill was not happy with that fact the all of the media attention was so positive; not one critical commentary about the Romulans, and their arrival on Earth. It reminded him of the early coverage of Barak Obama; no contrary opinions on any of the major networks. To be sure, Obama turned out to be a great President at a time when American needed one, but the lack of differing voices in those days worried Gill, and others like him who served in the congress at the time. Gill watched in utter contempt of this new version of media adulation and grew to despise Romulans more than he did the former occupants of Archer Island; the now defunct World Space Agency.

In Gill’s opinion, there was also nothing but positive coverage of the Earth’s joining the Federation. And while the untrustworthy Romulans were entrenching themselves on the east coast of North America, the intergalactic Federation was now occupying the west cost of North America, specifically San Francisco bay, not to mention the administrative arm of the Federation which was in Paris France. The Federation reminded Gill of Root Beer. It was very cloying, in how it just eventually won all detractors over. But, in the end, everyone enjoyed root beer. In a very short time, the Earth had gone from a backwater world, to a major hub of the galactic neighborhood; and John Gill did not like it. It was contrary to God’s law, and Gill saw the alien dominated Federation, and the vile Romulans, modern successors to the ancient Roman Empire, as absolute threats to Earth’s future.

The real John Gill had actually died, as did most of his followers. But before his death he had transferred his memories, his very essence, inside of an exact android copy of his body. It always amused Gill that while his old friend Richard Daystrom was obsessed with artificial life, Gill was more inspired by what he saw as the transference of the human soul, its very essence, into an unending supply of mechanical bodies; androids. The S.P.O.C.K. A.I. construct Daystrom and his team had created was worthy step forward, in technology. In fact, Gill though to himself as looked back at a strange mechanical object that was kept inside a temperature sealed case, when opportunity presented it self, Gill would activate the second generation of A.I. computer hardware that Daystome had invented, and Gill had accuired; the D.A.T.A. (readers will remember that the D.A.T.A. device was briefly touched on way back in Chapter 12 of PHASE TWO). Gill was confident that the ability to live forever through android technology held a more promising future for mankind.

With the help of Roger Corby, a contemporary of Richard Daystrom, this miracle had been possible. There was now no reason for a human to die, and his experience to pass with him to what ever was beyond this life, if there was such a place. In fact, if a person wanted to, they could easily be a man in one life time, and a woman in the next. But each new life time would last as long as a hundred years, a man or woman could live forever. And the world would benefit because no one need die; no need for the gifted, such as the modern Einsteins or modern Ghandi’s to die. Humanity, though artificial, would finally grow to new bounds.

However, presently, to the rest of the world, John Gill was believed to be dead. No one, not a soul, besides Roger Corby, knew that Gill was somehow, still alive. And for now, Gill wanted to keep it that way.

John Gill, who sat in his chair and watched the media coverage of Romulans and the Federation, would not let Earth slip into the grasps of the Romulans, or become just another voice in the chorus of the Federation. To that end, he had devised the perfect plan to drive both the Romulans and the Federation off of the Earth.

Roger Corby entered Gill’s viewing room. Corby, and android himself, was the only other person who knew Gill was still alive. Corby willingly did the bidding of Gill; under the agreement that someday, with Corby’s help, all of humanity would be replaced by Corby inspired androids. And, after that was done, the android Earth population would head into the stars to convert the other species, Vulcans-Klingons, or what ever alien races they might find, into the perfect order of an android.

“The Sarek android is ready,” Corby told Gill. “At your command I will initiate the second phase of our plan, and abduct the Ambassador. Once he is in our care, I will transfer his essence into his android, and with reprogramming, we will be able to put phase three of our plan into motion.”

Gill looked at the monitor as it showed an image of the Romulan Praetor; Curios.

“Very good,” Gill finally said. “Once our Sarek android is back at his post,” Gill said as the monitor zoomed in on a smiling Praetor, as he was interviewed by Jennifer Waters (Grand-daughter of Barbra Waters) “he will carry out the most important assassination in the history of the galaxy.” Gill said, as he pretended to shoot a gun at Curios. “And then, in the chaos of what comes, the Romulans will start a war with the Earth. The Romulans will be driven off of Earth, and the Federation, with the shame of allowing this to happen, will be forced to leave as well.”

“And then?” Corby asked.

“Then we will use the vacuum of leadership that is left,” Gills said, “to begin the process of killing off most of humanity, and replacing those who remain with your android creations. And then, with that done, the true glory of Earth will rise against our galactic neighbors and rule the universe.”

--
The head of Section-31, Sloan, sat in his office at a secret location on Earth. He spoke to someone on the other end of the phone.

“Kirk’s offspring, David Marcus, is already showing signs of unique abilities.” Sloan reported.

“We must very careful,” the other voice, a man’s, responded. “We don’t want another mistake to happen as it did when we sided with Gill and took out the Martian colony. Keep your surveillance of Kirk’s offspring secret at this time.”

“Why?” Gill asked. “Kirk is no threat to us, he is trapped on the other side of the galaxy.” (And his adventures there are all apart of Star Trek Phase Two: The Voyage Home)

“Trust me,” the voice said, “The last thing we need is to anger Kirk’s allies here on Earth.”

“I understand,” Sloan said. “But since David Marcus was brought back from the dead, by Mitchell, we must entertain the possibility that the child was brought back from a place no one should ever come back from.”

“Death?” the other voice asked.

“Yes,” Sloan said. “If David Marcus can be brought back, then why not Christ, Gandhi, or Hitler,” Sloan said. “We can not risk those kinds of rebirths.”

“Agreed; now, what about the Romulans?” the other voice.

“Not to worry,” Sloan said. “We already have an agent on the inside. We will keep an eye on our Romulan friends. There is nothing the can do that we won’t know about.”

“Very well,” the voice said. “Keep me posted.”

Puzzle Piece

PLANET EARTH
STARFLEET COMMAND; SAN FRANCISCO

The images inside of Colonel Pike’s mind were very vivid, and full of great detail. The memories showed the massive cone-shaped devices slicing a planet apart, while a larger cube shaped seemed to just be there observing. Ambassador Sarek, of Vulcan, had to fight back the urge to tremble in fear as he watched the planet be torn apart, the water from the world simply rushing into the void of space, along with the fiery innards of the planet. As Sarek relived Pike’s memories he had to remember that the destruction of this planet happened somewhere in the distant Delta-Quadrant, where the USS ENTERPRISE had been lost. (And as presented in STAR TREK PHASET TWO: THE VOYAGE HOME).

Sarek had seen what needed to be seen and, slowly, he disengaged his mind from Colonel Pike’s mind. The two men were sitting in chairs at the center of a circular room. The outer-rim of the room was where the various Ambassadors sat and, witnessed the mind-meld. The gathered Ambassadors, and military officials, from various Federation worlds was the first of its kind on the new home world of Starfleet Command; Earth.

Colonel Pike, visibly still shaken by the mind-meld, took a sip of some water (which he had spiked with a slight vodka chaser earlier) to ease the drained feeling he had. It felt, to Pike, like a mild hangover. He was pretty sure the Vodka would amplify the sensation later, but for now, Pike didn’t care.

Sarek stood up and walked over to the podium in the center of the room. The meeting was being held in top-secret, and in room that had been swept for listening devices of all kind. The information gained from the mind-meld was deemed top-secret, until such time Starfleet had time to go over it.

But although the room had been swept, one listening device had not been found. Because, unknown to Pike, it had been surgically put inside of his body nearly two months earlier under the guise of a tooth operation. While Pike was ‘under’, and during the routine cavity filling, the dentist, a secret operative of clandestine group called Section-31, inserted the listening device.

Sarek spoke at the podium.

“I can verify what the Colonel saw,” Sarek said. “His memories are accurate, and valid. Whether or not the objects attacking the now destroyed world (Sarek pointed to an artist’s rendition of the long, cylinder shaped devices, and the large cube shaped vessel as well) are of Borg origion, we have only the words of the mysterious Trelane being to go by.”

“Yet,” the Andorian military advisor noted, “we can not be sure.”

“Affirmative,” Sarek said. “However, I see no advantage to this Trelane being, should he be trying to mislead us.”

“Perhaps,” the Tellirite member of Starfleet Command’s concil said, “this Trelane being is working in league with the attackers and wants to blame a race that we no nothing about.”

“No,” Pike said from where he sat. “Trelane made it perfectly clear to me that the attackers were the Borg.”

“Still; there is no absolute truth,” the Tellirite pushed back.

“I guess not,” Pike said. “But whether or not it was the Borg isn’t really the issue. What should be is that there is proof now that there are forces out there that are far more superior, presently, than our current capabilities. I suggest we start preparing for the day when we run up against such threats.”

Sarek looked to Pike, then back to the seated Admirals.

“I would hope that peace, and negotiations, can prevail in this instance.” Sarek said to them all.

“I agree,” Earth Ambassador, and President, Harsha Jadhav said.

“I don’t have proof,” Pike said in a skeptical tone, “But I bet the people of the world I saw sliced up like a piece of fruit were willing to give-in; and look where they are now.”

“For all we know,” the Andorian said, “that world was uninhabited.”

“I hope you’re right,” Pike said with a wry smile. “But what if you’re not?”

The room became alive with murmurs. Pike shook his head. It was quite clear, to him, that the Federation of Planets, that Earth had just joined, had been very use to an existence without a pure threat. Pike wondered if the military was truly up to the task; because, as Pike thought about it more, a test was coming soon. A test called the Borg.

Some of these mods are just out of control, and no one seems to care.

So..I hope you follow me over to AD ASTRA where I will continue to post my stories, and post on the forums there as well. Its been a fun ride at BBS; from FRANK GRAYSON to THE ESSIANS to PHASE TWO(s). Love ya all!!!

The market place, in downtown San Diego by the old Padre ballpark, was very crowded. And as Caroline Andrews pushed a shopping cart up and down the aisles, she could see the reason for the crowds due to the very shirts most of the other shoppers were wearing; San Diego Charger football fans. Even as the Earth was now becoming a galactic power, it still held proudly to some of its customs; and one of those customs was football Sunday. And on this night, at 630pm, the San Diego Chargers would begin their new season against the London Churchills. There was an undeniable air of excitement as the shoppers grabbed their potato chips, soft drinks, and other party food items.

And as baby David sat up in the special seat that was built into the shopping cart, he smiled at vibrant colors of the various football jerseys. One particular football fan who was carrying a 12 pack of beer, walked by Caroline and David, wearing an Oakland Raiders jersey, which included a skull and bones. This caused David to burrow himself deep inside the seat. (Writer’s note; Can you could blame David? I HATE the Raiders!)

Caroline smiled as she looked down at the cowering child. Her husband, Mark, was on a business trip overseas, leaving Caroline and David, who was truly Jim Kirk’s son, alone for the week. Caroline liked the time she had alone with David, because it gave her a chance to spoil the child with her love, and with toys as well. Mark was, admittedly, not the father type, which was part of the reason they had never had children of their own. But with Kirk lost on the other side of the galaxy, they both, Caroline and Mark, accepted Colonel Pike’s request, he being Caroline’s older brother, to raise the infant.

Unknown to Caroline, her innocent shopping trip was not going unnoticed. Another woman, seemingly buying food items as well, was keeping a safe distance from Caroline. But in actuality she was there for another reason; to keep an eye on Caroline Andrews, but more importantly, to keep an eye on David Marcus; a child, who just past the age of eighteen months, was seen as a miracle by some, but a threat to others.

--
A half an hour later, with her shopping finished, Caroline loaded the groceries into her SUV (remember readers, this is the 2050s, and I think cars, even electric ones like this, will still be in vogue) and set David into his car seat. Moments later, she exited the parking lot and headed home.

The woman monitoring Caroline at the market, signaled others of her departure. And as the ‘others’ received the scrambled signal, the final preparations were made. If all went according to plan, then by the end of then next half hour, Caroline Andrews would be dead, and baby David Marcus would disappear; forever.

--
Everything worked like clockwork. As Caroline drove home, an innocent looking road crew detoured her down another road that took her down the canyon road of the San Diego suburb called Claremont. Once her SUV had been detoured, the road crew switched the detour signs so that no other car could go down the same road Caroline had.

As the SUV made its way down the road, a cop-car came up from behind. Caroline, being the law abiding citizen she was, pulled over to the side of the road; exactly where the officer had motioned her to. Once she had pulled over, and shut the car off, she realized that her SUV, and the cop-car, were not the only vehicle in the road cutoff. The other vehicles had their lights off. The other vehicles included a large black truck, a long black limo, and two larger SUVs. Caroline didn’t like the looks of things, and realized something was going on when neither her cell-phone did not work. Who were these people, and what did they want, Caroline thought to her self. Finally one of the backdoors of the limo opened and a man, and a woman, stepped out. He wore a long black trench coat, and approached her SUV with a very cold demeanor. The woman, who also was very cold looking, wore a tight leather outfit that clung to her well-shaped body.

“Who are you?” Caroline asked as she rolled down her window. “What do you want with me?”

Sloan flashed her a smile, but Caroline knew a fake smile when she saw one.

“Actually Mrs. Andres, we’re not here for you,” Sloan said. “We’re here for the child.”

Caroline became very agitated.

“What?” Caroline replied. “He’s just a child. Take me if you want, but please leave my baby alone!”

Sloan’s smile disappeared as fast as it had come.

“The child isn’t yours,” Sloan said, “The child is the offspring of Captain James Kirk, currently missing in action.”

“I won’t let you take him!” Caroline said as she un-strapped David from his car-seat and held him close to her.

“Please,” Sloan said. “Don’t make this any harder than it is.”

Caroline held the baby tighter. Sloan turned to his leather-clad assistant.

“Attendant,” Sloan said to the woman, “I believe this is where you take over.”

Drowning Sorrow

The Roman Empire may not have been the biggest Empire in the Earth’s ancient history, but it was, as some would argue, the most influential. When the Roman Empire finally fell, the vacuum that remained ushered in the Dark Ages. And many of the struggles that came after the Roman Empire fell would set the template for the modern world’s borders and cultural centers. The fall of the Roman Empire from grace happened after the Vulcans had spirited from Earth over fifty thousand Romans to the planet Vulcan.

The Romulan Praetor, Curio, had spent many of the recent days reading about Earth’s history. He read about the fracturing of the Roman Empire, and its slow descent that came from that fracturing. He read on about the rise of Democratic and Republican from of governments. There had been attempts to bring the world under one first, particularly the attempts by Napoleon and Hitler, but their efforts failed. He was brought out of his thoughts as the Transport vessel finally landed.

Curio stepped out of the transport vessel that had brought him to Rome Italy and was pleased to hear the loud cheers of a very jubilant crowd. The proud Italian populace, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, greeted the Praetor as though he were a rock star; or, more to the point, and even more important, the crowd was more enthusiastic for the Praetor than they had been for the pass several decades of Popes.

Curio looked to his female military advisor, Nor’vra, as the Italian dignitaries greeted them. Curio and Nor’vra, who were sometimes lovers, shared a knowing glance. It was clear to both of them that the Earth’s population, or at least some of it, was treating the Romulans as returning saviors. It was a, Curio told her the previous day, a start, and proved the Praetor’s belief that in time, the Earth’s population would eventually ask him to lead their world; and it wouldn’t take a conquering army to convince them.

--
Colonel Christopher Pike sat alone in his office at Starfleet Command. He had lowered the lights, and held a glass of pure Vodka in one hand, and a cigarette in the other. News of Caroline and David’s death had been relayed to him only moments before as he came into his office for work. His secretary broke the news to him, leaving Pike in silent shock.

Throughout his entire adult life, Christopher Pike had fought a drinking problem. It had been his younger sister, Caroline, that had pushed Pike the hardest to beat the habit. So, while he downed the Vodka, he found it Ironic that this was how he faced her loss; drinking. As he looked at the picture of her on his desk, there was a knock at his door, but Pike was too lost in his sorrow to care. The door opened and Ambassador Sarek entered the office and shut the door. The stoic looking Vulcan, wearing his usual heavy cloak, came over and sat in the chair next to Pike, as he had done several times while discussing galactic issues, and or the settling of the Romulans on Earth.

“I wanted to come and express my condolences and Amanda’s as well.” Sarek said. “If you need anything, please let me know.”

Pike nodded his head.

“You didn’t have to come, Ambassador.” Pike said softly. “I know you have many responsibilities, and helping an old man relive old memories isn’t one of them.” Pike said.

“Colonel,” Sarek said, “I am a very private person, and I can count on one hand those I consider friends; you are one of them.”

“I don’t suppose you want a drink?” Pike asked.

Sarek reached into his cloak and pulled out a flask of blue liquid.

“Colonel; if you are going to drink,” Sarek said, “I suggest you drink properly.”

Sarek took Pike’s glass, and poured the Vodka on the floor. Then he poured Pike a shot of the blue liquid, and then retrieved another glass from the desk, and poured himself one as well. Pike and Sarek toasted each other and downed the drinks. Pike’s face took on a slight tortured look as the drink went down.

“Oh Wow,” Pike said. “That’s pretty good.”

“The Romulans may be a very stubborn people,” Sarek said, “however; they do make great ale.”

In the silence of the office, both men let the power of the ale live in the moment.

Nearly ten minutes had passed before either one had said another word; finally Sarek did.

“I know you considered the David Marcus child nearly a son,” Sarek said. “Losing a child is never easy, I know, I lost mine years ago.”

“I thought Vulcan’s didn’t feel loss.” Pike said to Sarek.

“Trust me Colonel, we have emotions.” Sarek said. “We have learned to control them and yet they are always there.”

”You had another son?” Pike asked.

“Yes,” Sarek said...

K I R K

The silence of the dark two lane highway was disrupted as the a lone, pitch black, eighteen-wheeler made its way through the forest of Ashton Colorado, a very obscure town located on the outskirts of the Rock Mountains. It was pulling one long, and equally, black trailer. The truck was preparing to enter a truck stop for a last refueling stop before beginning the long climb to its final destination; a former top-secret base that was now under the control of Section-31, and hidden in an alcove of the mountain range.

The driver, Darrell, a black man in his late 40s, brought the truck to a stop along side one of the fueling pumps, and stayed in the truck as his co-driver, a red-headed young man named Kyle, got out of the truck to handle the refueling chore. The truck-stop was open 24 hours a day, and also had an Arby’s on the inside which was also opened 24 hours a day.

The long drive from San Diego was nearly over. Neither man had the slightest fear that the doors of the trailer could be opened. The precious cargo, an eighteen-month old infant, posed no threat and was kept at bay by a specially constructed electric field inside the trailer. The two man team had been warned numerous times by Slone to not open the trailer for any reason. The child would survive the drive and would be cared for once it was safely inside the top-secret compound. The co-driver bought himself a roast-beef sandwich for himself, and another one for the driver. Both men wore normal civilian truck driver attire, but were also trained military type who could kill anyone in an instant. What neither truck driver knew was that their baby passenger was no longer alone; the baby’s father was now in the trailer as well; his name was Captain James Tiberius Kirk!

--
James T Kirk didn’t know exactly how it had happened, his return to Earth from the far off Delta-Quadrant, but as he held his son, David Marcus in his arms, he had a pretty good idea.

David Marcus was not an ordinary child. He had died not long after his birth, when a massive asteroid fragment hit an island off the coast of Australia. (brief-recap for new readers—in an earlier plot line; Gary Mitchell used his new found powers, and while black mailed by Khan, directed the asteroid fragment to strike the island so as to kill John Gill who had double-crossed Khan.) Kirk knew that his son, David, had died, for he saw it happen right before his eyes seconds before Kirk was beamed away.

When Gary Mitchell, months later, brought David back to life, Kirk could only wonder where his son had been all that time. With Carol Marcus no longer alive and Kirk not ready to be the father David needed at the time, Kirk agreed with Colonel Pike’s suggestion to let his sister and her husband raise David. But, while Kirk was lost in the Delta-Quadrant, it was clear to him that something had gone wrong. David had obviously been taken from Caroline, Pike’s sister. With his son’s life in apparent danger, Kirk, for the first time, felt the paternal instincts of a father kick in; whoever was responsible for kidnapping David would have to answer to him. Had his son brought him all the way back from the other side of the galaxy simply because he wanted his father?
--

Kyle handed the roast-beef combo to Darrell.

“Maybe I should take a look back there, just to make sure the kid is still alive.” Kyle said, while sipping a diet-coke.

“You heard what they told us,” Darrell said, as he shifted the Houston Texan ball-cap on his head, “they said not to open that trailer unless it was an emergency.”

“Oh come on Darrell,” Kyle said as he munched on his sandwich. “The kid would probably like to munch on some fries. What’s the harm?”

Suddenly they both heard the crying of the baby in the trailer. Although they were trained Section-31 operatives, they were also human beings.

“Alright,” Darrell finally said. “Go ahead and give some of your fries to the little kid. Just hurry up so we can get out of here and get our on-time bonus.”

You(2)

(Families across the globe are watching the final episode of Battlestar Urantia, when suddenly!)

This is ABC news; we interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring this special ABC News Bulletin. Reporting live is ABC news correspondent; Ted Jackson from Sydney Australia.

(The scene on everyone’s TV suddenly shows the outside of a Hospital, in Sydney, and an African-American news reporter, very distinguished looking, standing near the hospital entrance. Sirens can be heard as the reporter gives his report. Other network reporters, many of them in fact, can be seen scattered about the scene as well.)

“This is Ted Jackson reporting from Sydney’s International Hospital. We were informed about a half hour ago that Vulcan Ambassador Sarek has suffered what appears to be a minor stroke.”

As Jackson gives his report, an image of Sarek, and his wife Amanda, appears in the upper left part of the news broadcast.

“I have been told by my sources,” Ted Jackson continued, “that a Vulcan doctor, in fact Ambassador Sarek’s own personal physician, Dr. Sovor, has been beamed down to Australia from his offices at the newly built Federation complex in Paris France. As our viewers well know, the Transporter is a recently invented technology that will soon allow average citizens to immediately Transport anywhere in the world instantly. The system is slowly coming on line, and with help from our Federation allies, should be at full use with in the next several months.”

The image on the broadcast shows recorded video from earlier. The video footage shows, in a blurry, hurried kind of way, Sarek being brought into the hospital on a gurney. Amanda can also be seen being led in by several police officers. The broadcast cuts back to Tom Jackson, standing outside the hospital.

“According to inside sources,” Jackson continued, “Ambassador Sarek suffered a minor cardiac arrest nearly three years ago on an alien world called Cardassia. It is not certain if this event is related to that one, but it is important because the Vulcans have been our world’s biggest supporters as we have joined the galactic neighborhood. He also helped negotiate the Romulan return to our world after their nearly 4000 years absence. Ambassador Sarek is considered a very pivotal figure when it comes to Earth and its relations not only now, but in the near future, with other alien worlds. According to ABC news financial advisor Nick Meyer, the Asian stock-markets have already took a hit on this dire news.”

Suddenly Tom Jackson looks up into the sky, and the cameraman follows his lead. A large helicopter can be seen landing on the roof, nearly eighty stories his.

“We are getting reports,” Tom reports, “that President Harsha Jadhav has just arrived. That tells you how really important the relationship between the Vulcans and our own world are. Apparently Ambassador Sarek and President Jadhav have become very good friends in the short amount of time Earth has come out of an isolated existence to a new partner in galactic relations. No doubt the President is here to see to his friend’s care.”
