Pet Quirks

When I was very young I had a tuxedo cat named Edwin Meese...

I love that name! I have a tuxedo cat too, called Squeaky (not my choice!) who likes to sit in my chair ~ when I'm sitting in it. There are 2 identical chairs around the dining table but he wants mine. He will climb up and try and get on it with me or if I get up he will be installed on it on my return so I have to move the chair and get another.

He also likes to watch people getting dressed/undressed! It is slightly disconcerting :shifty:

I have a Chihuahua/Dachshund (Chiweenie) who absolutely hates to get her nails clipped. The phobia is so bad that if you even mention the word "nails" she runs and hides behind a couch.

I had an awesome pet rat. She somehow figured to get out of her cage, but instead of running to some hole, she would just seek me out. There have been a few times where I would be watching TV and I would find her walking from the hallway from my bedroom and coming up to say hi.

When I was in high school, we had an English Springer Spaniel who, if anyone scolded her, would promptly find the nearest available family member not in the room and sit on their feet. In her younger years, she also thought she was a 60 pound lap dog.

I had a cat who was extremely smart and extremely persistent. The result was that she was the Houidini (sp?) of the cat world. She could get out of, or into, anything she wanted. Some examples:

When we'd have her boarded at the vets for some trips, she find multiple ways to escape from their cages, depending on which cage they'd put her in. Anything that she ever wanted to get into, she got into eventually. Patience and persistence paid off. She'd fiddle for hours and hours figuring out how to open latches with her paw, work door knobs, etc. She'd move a bookshelf from infront of a panel and then pry the panel open to get into the pipes.

One of my previous cat named Bam Bam (th mother of Miss Chicken) loved to shred paper. if newspapers or any other pieces of paper were left on the floor she would slice them into pieces

My childhood cat, Tiddles, was tolerant of nearly every other species of animals as this photo shows
IMGtif.jpg

Besides the guinea pig and the budgie she also liked our chickens. The only animal she disliked was our galah because soon after we got him he bit Tiddles on the nose.

The budgie in the photo was named Birdle. He was madly in love with his toy penguin. He also had a toy canary but if you put the canary close to the penguin Birdle would become enraged. He would attack the canary viciously, pecking it and throwing it around. He would drag it over to his water bowl and would put it head first into the water trying to drown it.

Two more about the Calico that I forgot. Since I've changed my dietary habits and only go out of the way for good food (ie no preservatives, etc) I've learned, from goofy around, that she LOVES ice cream. She goes wild at the sound of a ceramic dish and spoon clanging and harasses me until I set it on the floor. Last winter, while my son and I were playing Nintendo, he'd have me hold his ice cream cone and I'd offer her some. That's when she got hooked.

Also, she has had a very bizarre litterbox act ever since I adopted her. No matter how early or how late it is when I get home, she runs to the box, digs and roots around in it, and then relieves herself. Go figure

The only weird thing my doggie does is that she sleeps in the weirdest positions. As I read this thread, I looked over at her, and she was belly up, feet in the air, ears all askew, eyes half open, dead to the world.

JP--I wonder if your cat is literally relieved that you're home? Cats do sometimes withhold when they're stressed.

My husband swears that our cat, Violet, behaves differently when I'm not home. When I'm home, she is a mischievous little lady, crawling in cabinets or knocking items from tables or (this month) climbing the Christmas tree. But when I'm gone, he says she calms down and hops in his lap or sleeps on the couch next to him. I don't know why she saves all her badness for Mama! She better be glad that she's so cute. ;)

I know kitties make all manner of silly noises, but we always make fun of her because she frequently makes a noise that sounds like "Errr err errr." It's an indignant sound, and she makes it when hopping down from something or if we fuss at her about something. She also does it when playing, sometimes.

We had a female beagle when I was a kid, named Ranger after Radar O'Reilly's dog, who would climb up on the roof of our car and hang out all day long.

She'd just jump bumper-hood-roof, walk around in circles a few times, flop down, and watch the world go by. People would stop and point and take pictures.

Luckily we always drove crappy cars, so my parents didn't mind.

My cats both love to drink from a running tap. My male cat will start meowing at me insistently as soon as I get home and run to the bathroom for the water to be turned on. He only meows at me too, never my wife.

He also like sleeping in the sink but I think a lot of cats do that.

One of my cats will sometimes insist on being petted while he eats. Otherwise he'll just sit there and meow frantically. He used to become enraged by anything with polka-dots on it.

One of my previous cats was a bit odd. I swear he was an alien rather than a feline. For example, he loved riding on the front of the vacuum while I hoovered the carpets. All my other cats hated the sound and would hide. He also loved water. I caught him several times swimming in the stream behind the house. He also loved snow and would go digging in it. This crazy kitty also loved licking windows, especially the side transom glass beside the front door. He would spend hours licking that window and watching birds in the front yard. He also would try and climb into the fridge every time the door would open. You had to be very careful or someone would get trapped in the vegetable crisper. One of the weirdest things he would do is try and talk. You could ask him a question and he would try and answer you. If he didn't like something he would grumble like an old man. And if you chastised him, he would back talk.

When I was a kid, we had a dog that would walk into walls. We never could figure out why though. My parents even had the vet check his eyes but they were fine.

Santa Smurf--

You're not the only one who's had a cat talk. Mine actually tried to call me "bitch" on a couple of occasions when I wouldn't get up RIGHT then to let her out on the sunporch. She's also made fun of my talking on a few other occasions when she's mad.

Mostly, though, she's a good cat.

:guffaw::guffaw: Best cat story, EVAR!

My Calico will meow at me, like she's yelling at me (a prolonged meow/growl), and when I reciprocate, she gets more emphatic at "yelling" at me.

My cat ~ The Squeak, abhors the snow and is now in a very grumpy mood as it has been hanging around since Friday. He will not go out unless absolutely neccessary and even then stares at his paws as they are cold and wet. He is now so bored he has investigated/wrecked all of the cupboards and has taken to sitting on the chair at the end of our bed all night staring at us as if to say "it's still out there, what are you going to do about it?"

You gotta love 'em :)

Our Rotty normally had on his choker chain which (which had his registration tag) and every so often he'd sit in the kitchen doorway this big goofy look on his face (who ever said dogs don't have expressive faces is way wrong) with his chain hin his mouth like a horse's bridle. No idea how he managed it becasue we never saw him actually do it.

Also from a very early age he loved to race out and get the morning paper (which he got a reward for and incidiently he'd let you know if you forgot his reward). One day we have both the morning Murdoch and the Suburban paper which was in a plastic bag like you get from Subway.

Magus dumps the Message out of it's bag, has it still folded uses it to pick up The Adelaide Advertiser and trots inside with both in his mouth.
