Wow, what a surprise so late in life! I'm actually surprised that no one knew about anything earlier. I'm sure a 66 year old person has been to the doctor many times. Of course, maybe not. Either way, that's quite a life event to wrap one's mind around!

^It's actually more common than one might imagine, though I think it more often happens that males are misidentified as females. There is even a community (I believe in South America, though I'm not positive because it's been a while since I studied this), where it is actually very common for boys to be raised as girls until they hit puberty, their testes descend and their penises grow. It's genetic and the community is tight knit, so it happens frequently there. Sometimes people refer to this as "ambiguous genitalia" but I know that many individuals who have genitalia not as easily classified as male or female find that term offensive.

I'd highly, highly recommend the novel Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, which is told from the perspective of an intersex man raised as a girl. It's one of my favorite novels, actually.

Uhhhh... no menstruation? He/She didn't pee blood once a month? Or was there some "lost in the middle" kind of condition where there is a uterus but no periodic ovulation?

I mean, this is just a really freak exception to the rule. Any blood work done on him during one of many possible common hospital tests would've shown that this person is a woman. Must be someone who has lived a secluded life and... well, I know I probably would if I was so equipped.

But when girls hit puberty, what happens? Menstruation. And that's what has me puzzled, because if genetically a person is female, complete with uterus and Fallopian tubes, then wouldn't they menstruate? Or is it that the organs are there but somehow inert... live organs but not performing reproductive related functions? Why can't I ask questions like this without getting pounced on? I'm not trying to be a dickhead, just expand understanding.

^There are many reasons a woman might not menstruate. A simple look at the wikipedia page on Turner's Syndrome would be enough to tell you that most women with Turner's don't menstruate.
