The thing I like about TREK fans is that most of us can wrangle ourselves out of any test put to us...the BABY HITLER thread proves this again. YOU GUYS and GALS are good...

So..lets make this simple...

Let say you were suddenly confronted by a super being, something like Q. And he took you back to the point where Hitler was born. Q tells you that by simply taking this innocent baby, and killing it, with out any chance of ever being caught, you would alter the future. The new future would mean..

1. No world war 2.
2. The world powers would come together and a thousand year peace would settle over earth with out war or hunger or, heck, global warming. No viet nam, no Korean war, now Dubbya in office...pick your ill. In essence, man kind would come together at last, just like in Star Trek, peace peace peace..fire crackers everywhere....

would you, given the choice between the path Earth took to now, or a path to world peace and, in essence, the end of materialism and all that...would you take the life of baby Adolf Hitler...

Paradise or What we have now...cut and dry...DO you have a price? No wiggle room. Q offers you a peaceful world in one hand or the world we have existed on in the past 90 years or so..your choice..the cost? Your soul

Could we still have war movies?

Yes. In a hearbeat and twice on Sunday.

What in the name of Eccentrica Gallumbits does this have to do with DS9? This is the same thing as the Hitler poll, only reworded.

The simple fact is that the alternate timeline that you describe is complete horsecrap compared to a reality without Hitler. Stalin and the Iron Curtain would still rise, as would Adolf's pal, Benito. The Depression would still loom, just the same. Japan would still make war on the Pacific, and would still savage China. And some other dangerous idealogue would rally the down-trodden German people to seek vengeance against Europe for their mistreatment following the Great War.

If Q told me otherwise, I wouldn't believe him. Period. The world survived WW2, and corrected a lot of the mistakes that lead to it. That, I can put my faith in.

The fact is that such a choice would sour immediately after having been made.

The peace of which Q spoke would perhaps be one in which everyone was comfortably numb, if you take my meaning. No freedom ... no creativity.

Look at "Tapestry." Picard does something stupid, and when he tries to set it right, his whole life turns to shit, because in the new reality clearly he doesn't learn anything from the lesson that incident taught him.

I'd tell Q to take a hike. If the cosmos were that easy to change, the next Q could simply ask the same question of a man living in the newly-established Pablum Reality, the other guy answers differently ...

... and things'd be back to the way they were.

It 'has to do with DS9" in a small way. Sisko made a choice in Pale moonlight, and he took it. He chose his path, got drunk, and rationalized he would do it again.

Most TREK fans, I have found, are very thought driven. And most, as the Baby Hitler poll, seem to favor not killing the Hitler child. But they also correctly assumed WW2 would have happened with or with out hitler, and i agree.

This choice is simple...kill Baby Hitler and you get world peace. I am trying to find out of if some of these people have a 'price'. Would they eventually throw out their logic, morality/ethics at some given point...

I could make a thread about how the doors on DS9 work and how many torpedo turrets DS9 has...but where's the fun in that.

What I don't understand is why this thread was created? You're asking the same question again, only worded slightly differently.

And yeah, nothing about baby Hitler has anything to do with DS9.

Not really. Sisko had no foreknowledge of events to come. It more closely resembles the decisions characters had to make in "City on the Edge of Forever" or "Timeless". The closest DS9 came to such a decision was, I guess, "Children of Time".
