PC game suggestions

Okay, time for a real thread in here... ;)

I have a relatively new gaming rig that I built back in January (Pic 1, Pic 2 for those that are interested, please excuse the wiring job), but have only bought a few new games for it (Civ 4, Fable). So any suggestions about computer games would be much appreciated.

The most recent game I bought before the computer was SimCity 4, but I am more than willing to look at older games (if I can find them).

Thanks! :techman:

If you enjoy FPS games you owe it to yourself to get the Orange Box. Five award winning games for $29.99 or less.

If you're into multiplayer shooters I highly recommend picking up Team Fortress 2.
It's very easy to get into, has 9 different classes which all feel very different (for example the Heavy is very slow but his minigun rips the other players to pieces, the scout is so fast he can run circles around all the other classes, and the medic engages in very little direct combat, mostly healing other players instead), is only $20, and several times a year has large, free content packs which gives a class (or two) new weapons, along with new game modes and new maps.

Plus it's part of the Orange Box that Kelthaz mentioned, so you can get TF2, along with 4 other games for only $30.

What kinds of games do you like? I tend to have mostly older ones (older computers) but there are some that are just timeless classics. But I don't want to recommend something that isn't your cup of tea, either!

There's Galactic civilizations 2 with the two expnasion packs, it's a good space based 4X game. If you don't mind RTS elements then I'd recommend Empire Total War, a 17th century war game. For FPS there's always Crysis and you can get the Maximum Crysis edition which has both the orginal game and Warhead. Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl is another good FPS game with some RPG elements and it should be avalaible as a budget game. RPG wise Fallout 3 is good and plus there are a lot of very good mods for it. There's also Kings Bounty which is fun.

I'm willing to try just about anything, so suggest away. Besides, I'm sure other people wouldn't mind some suggestions either. ;)

Like I mentioned earlier, my most recent games are definitely strategy, city/empire building games. I also have most of the C&C series (except for the most recent games). Speaking of which, does anyone know how good C&C3 and Red Alert 3 are?

I'm not so much into FPS games and wasn't much for adventure/RPG games on the PC. But that was before I tried Fable and I enjoyed it a lot.

C and C 3 and red alert 3were both great games and worthy of purchase. Red Alert 3 also has a co-op campaign mode which was pretty awesome.

I would also like to suggest FEAR and FEAR2, both of which are first person shooters with a Japanese horror style twist to them. Call of Duty 4 was one of the better first person shooters to come out recently as well, and was full of fun and awesomeness

Disciples II is a very good strategy game with RPG elements. You can find the pack with all the expansions for something like $10 now. Other good ones are Dungeon Keeper, and if you don't mind trying to get something like DOSBox to work, X-COM. The Fallout games are also excellent.

There is one game I cannot recommend enough: Homeworld. It's a space-based real-time strategy game that is, in my opinion, one of the single greatest games ever made. A lot of games have little quirks or problems that make them difficult to fully enjoy. I think just about every aspect of Homeworld is excellent. The graphics, the music, the story, and especially the gameplay. The controls are deceptively simple--this is a very difficult and complex strategy game, but also very rewarding.

The standalone "expansion," Cataclysm, is also very good, although the story is not as epic or Earth-shattering. The sequel, Homeworld 2, is supposed to essentially be like a remake of the original, if you want something with more up-to-date graphics. But stuff like that isn't too important to me.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

It's on the Xbox 360, too, but with the huge modding community, I really can't imagine why you'd want to play it on that if your PC can handle it.

The main thing I like better about Homeworld 2 is the idea of squads for the fighters which Relic used in all their other recent RTS's. Basically a unit consists of 5 fighters (or 3 corvettes) and as long as one survives when it lands it will rebuild the lost ones. As such, the grouping makes it easier to handle large amounts of fighters. OTOH, they eliminated some things from Homeworld 1 like some of the more advanced formations and not everyone was too keen on that.

Either way, both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are excellent.

I'll second this, and also throw in Morrowind (Elder Scrolls III)

It has way more role playing depth than Oblivion and an even larger mod community (and thanks to that mod community, can be made to look a lot nicer than its sequel too!).

Morrowind is pretty much my favourite PC game OF ALL THYME.

(apart from Half Life 2, so the Orange Box suggestion is duly thirded too)

I've been considering getting back into Morrowind... I kind of gave up on it when I installed Bloodmoon and it crashed my (older, super-crappy) PC. :p

I wish they wouldn't count their MMOs as numbered FF games. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the numerals should be reserved for traditional FF entries.

I also throw my support behind Morrowind. That's one game that always stays on my computer. The original game is quite good, but it's infinitely flexible thanks to all the mods out there. Pretty much any mod you can think of, someone has done.

If you want an FPS game that is pretty much unlike any other, try Deus Ex. I'm someone who will forgive some of a game's faults if it makes up for them with a great story. This is one of those games. The graphics aren't the greatest, though they are quite varied, but the game itself is superb.

Another great RTS is Sacrifice. Unlike most RTS games, your alter ego is actually part of the battle, and you have to balance using your powerful abilities with not getting yourself killed. It's a fantasy-themed game, with a wide variety of creatures and settings. This is another one I always keep installed.

If you like space combat games at all, my recommendations are: Tachyon: The Fringe, Freespace and Freespace 2, Freelancer, and Independence War (plus its sequel.) The space combat genre has kind of died out in recent years, but those are some great selections to try.

If you like deathmatching, you can't go wrong with the Unreal Tournament series, either. I have almost all of them. They pretty much just get better and more varied, though they are all good on their own. There was also the aforementioned Orange Box, which I have and would also highly recommend, if only because it's such a great value for your money.

If you want to try something a little off the beaten path, there's what I would call a "puzzle racing" game called Audiosurf, where you can pick any music you have on your computer, have it generate a track based on it, and you essentially "ride your music." It's pretty, fun, and you get to listen to whatever songs you want while playing. You can get it for $10 via Steam.

Morrowind
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Half Life 2
Max Payne 2
Dark Messiah

except for the Elder Scrolls games just get Steam and go shopping :D
