Eh, he's just an architect of fear.
Someone faking an alien invasion? Superheroes doing it, perhaps, though I recall a comic or two that also used scientists faking alien invasions to bring about peace on Earth well before Watchmen came out. Watchmen is a well written story, not to my taste though, and very overrated.Even at the time, a lot of people thought it was an original idea.![]()
I read the first few issues when it came out, but lost interest. I appreciate what it has been to the genre, my dislike has been built much more by the many folks who've tried to convince me of its wonderfulness over the years. It's like being pestered by Sam-I-Am after I've already tried the eggs and ham.The ending did disappoint me when it first came out, after such a huge buildup (and a wait of about a year for that last issue). But with Watchmen it's all about the journey and the worldbuilding and the characters, at least in my opinion; I liked it.

It bugs me no end when folks try to tell me Watchmen was an original idea.
He was clearly just using it as a hypothetical example comparable to how WW2 helped us overcome the Great Depression, as even the article noted. Why is this news?
Unless these fake aliens blow up real factories, it won't do anything. Like the Great Depression, the primary cause of our economic slump is excess capacity which suppresses job growth.
So when will World War III start?
Because it's something for neo-conservative people to grasp in their continued dislike of Paul Krugman.
Actually they should like the idea since they like war.
A major war would make them and Krugman happy.

NO ONE (with few exceptions) likes war.....
"They" and "them", I presume, refers to conservatives as a whole. Generally, it's a bad idea to lump EVERYONE together like that.
Instead of painting with such a ridiculously broad brush, try using logic and reason, please.
Robert Culp was great in that episode.Eh, he's just an architect of fear.
