Patterns of Force question

balls

Commander
Red Shirt
I just watched the remastered version. Are they still cutting the episodes? I seem to remember that Kirk calls the Enterprise to have McCoy beam down in a Nazi uniform. In the version I just saw, they look for the cloak room and the next thing you see is McCoy complaining about the boot. Am I remembering this incorrectly?
Thanks

The entire episode was remastered. What we're seeing are episodes that have been edited for syndication.

How could they not? Hourlong TV shows in TOS's day had only 5-6 minutes of commercials, but syndicated reruns today are required to have roughly 18 minutes of commercials per hour to pay the bills. So it's a given that any TOS episode shown on commercial television today is going to have over 10 minutes of material cut out of it -- unless it runs in a 75-minute time slot or something.

And as Mallory said, it's only the syndication version that's been edited; the uncut versions of TOS-R will be available on DVD.

I suppose if CBS is going to put the money into new effects, they're going to sqeeze as much money out of the syndication deals that they can.

CBS doesn't have a choice in the matter. There isn't a single hour of television today that has fewer than 17 minutes of commercials in it, unless it's a live sporting event or a special news report or something. Every '60s or '70s show that's running in syndication today is hacked to pieces in the same way. Sometimes TVLand has been known to show uncut episodes in prime time, but only by running long so that the number of commercials per hour is the same.

And this is why I download whatever I want to watch. Life is too short to waste that way. For every three shows I save an hour. The networks can bite my pasty white ass.

From the Board Rules:
As a fan site for a television show, intellectual property is an important topic for us. We cannot legally or morally condone tape-trading in episodes or downloading episodes online, and do not allow discussions on this matter.
Let's just not go there and say we did, OK beaker?

^^You can download the episodes legally and for a fee from iTunes though.

But you know, the missing bits that are broadcast make watching the DVD's that much more enjoyable as you get to see footage never seen before or at least in a long time.

I'm still going through the original non-remastered TOS DVD's and it's fun catching that quick scene that was always cut.

Does iTunes have the uncut TOS remastered eps?

And obviously they can't have all three seasons, as the remastering hasn't yet finished. Is it possible to tell whether any given episode they have, is remastered?

Yes. I'm pretty sure they're all remastered (as in the brand-new film transfers with the better color and whatnot), and there are two separate entries for TOS, one with the new effects, one with the originals.

And, of course, both versions are totally uncut. At the moment, only season 1 is available, though (the whole thing in the original version, and whatever has been finished to date for the new effects version).

Totally uncut and with the new CGI? Wow! That would make me happy. I find the cuts really jarring after being spoiled by the full, restored, eps on DVD.

Which is totally what I meant.
That was being broadcast more to the general population than being directed at just you. Talk about downloading raises eyebrows at CBS. If you're pulling the stuff off of iTunes, please make sure you say so.

There's a noticeable scene cut at the very end. When McCoy and Spock are arguing about Earth history, Spock brings up the names of various evil figures in Earth history. Good little moment I was sorry to see cut.

Cuts like these are the reason I only watch Trek on dvd. Would I rather watch the full exchange between Spock and Decker, or a Herbal Essence commercial? Please.

Patterns of Force "stardate"

Some reference books have assigned a stardate of 2534.0 to this episode, from what I've read based on an earlier script version that had the stardate editied out when the episode was actually filmed. I only saw the last few minutes of the re-mastered version last Sunday, and I was wondering if anyone knows if a stardate was added in the re-mastered version.

Re: Patterns of Force "stardate"

I did some looking and I'm pretty sure that there's no stardate in the original (uncut) episode as aired, but I'd have to force myself to watch it again on DVD to be certain.

What's always bothered me about these episodes is how uncreative the costuming could be on these Earth parallel episodes. I mean, seriously, they had access to all these costumes (Western Costume, etc.), and they literally would do a 1:1 match with the precise Earth parallel. The Ekosians could have been Nazis in ANY uniform, just slap on the armband. They don't have to be perfect reproductions of the originals. Hell, they could have been wearing the Roman warrier skirts for all it mattered.

Re: Patterns of Force "stardate"

FWIW, G4 has shown TOS episodes (NOT the "remastered" versions) unedited in overlong time slots (same amount of commercials, just over-expanded episodes).

Good stuff to see...hard to watch in certain formats.

They may not have been. I thought I saw a few of the Ekosians wearing American helmets, but I'm not sure.
