*POTENTIAL SPOILERS*
You have been forewarned.

Is anyone else watching Partners on FX? If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's a show about two lawyers who team up to start their own practice.

Marcus Jackson (Martin Lawrence) is a community activist and lawyer who is in the middle of a divorce that is affecting him terribly. He's kind, honest, and gentle, in how he approaches his casework.

Allen Braddock (Kelsey Grammer) is a high profile lawyer who skirts the rules, and does whatever is necessary to win. He's been divorced before, and is currently married to a younger wife, and has a spoiled rotten daughter.

It all starts when Braddock (Grammer) is fired from his father's firm for constantly breaking the rules. He is then ordered to appear in court where the judge, who knows him and doesn't like his tactics, assigns him a pile of pro bono cases to teach him a lesson about his ethics. Meanwhile, Jackson (Lawrence) is going through a tough divorce, and he's so fed up with it and guilty about it that he's letting his wife have 70% of all of his assets, and half of his business. Braddock overhears the Judge talking to Jackson about this, and so he offers to take on the proceedings if Jackson works the pro bono cases for him. After some prodding, he agrees.

From there, hijinks ensue.

There have been about 6 episodes so far, and I've watched 4 of them. To be honest, the show isn't as good as I hoped it would be. It's not Grammer, who's damned good at nearly everything he does. It's not even Lawrence, who seems like he's sedated, and not really all together. I'm not sure if it's his medications, or if he just isn't really interested in the role, but he seems really lethargic. I'm also not a fan of the supporting cast. They all act like they're starring in a Nickelodeon TV series, where they over-exaggerate everything to an absurd degree. Even longtime actress Telma Hopkins (Bosom Buddies, Family Matters) seems out of place as Marcus Jackson's wise cracking mother, who lives in his house with him and his daughter Laura (Daniele Watts).

The office staff at the partnership is even worse. There's Tomboy Quirky Girl Veronica (Edi Patterson), and Obviously Gay Guy Michael (Rory O'Malley), who are hyperbole incarnate. To top it all off, there is a laugh track. Now, laugh tracks can be used effectively, but this one is just awful. It's overbearing, it interferes with the flow of the story, and it's horribly fake sounding.

I am an admirer of both Grammer, and Lawrence, and this show just feels like it's not even reaching for anything but the lowest branch on the tree. The stories aren't interesting, the humor is forced, the plots are turgid, and the supporting cast is just bad. Part of me wants the show to get canceled so Kelsey Grammer can be picked up to star in something good. I don't mean to be so down on the show, but it isn't at all what I was hoping. I was hoping something akin to Boston Legal, or even Frasier. What I've got so far is more like "Two and a Half Men" Meets "Victorious."

Is anyone else watching this? If so, what do you think so far? Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe I'm missing something. What do you think?

I couldn't get past the commercials. The clips they showed and the forced humor they tried to bring to the ads didn't do much to make me want to watch. Reading your review makes me even less interested.

It's a shame, because as you said, Grammar and Lawrence are two genuinely funny actors.

Kelsey gave his all in Boss yet it was cancelled.

#### the world.

Partners is terrible.

Boss really was a hell of a good show.

Exactly. Everything feels forced. It's not Grammer, and it's not Lawrence. I've seen both of them do comedy that just leaves me rolling on the floor.

FX ad FXX make some really smart programming for disgusting people, and disgusting programming for smart people.

Entourage

The Americans

FX must have decided that after they had all the smart people who like disgusting thing's money and all the disgusting people who like smart thing's money, that they now also wanted the boring people who like shit's money too.

OH!

Bosom Buddies!

Thank you!

I was trying to remember where she was from.

Yep. I think someone, somewhere, said "Hey, have we tried making cheap crap to see if it will sell?! People seem to like that!"

I really don't like slagging on a show that has such people like Kelsey Grammer or Martin Lawrence, but this show is beneath them. It really is. It is beneath their talent, and their skill. I want to like it, I really do, but I didn't laugh once when I watched it. 4 episodes, and not one laugh. The best I could do was a half-hearted chuckle a few times, but that was it.

I did quote the pilot in my Heartless stripper thread in the Neutral Zone.

"If emotional scars were visible, all strip joints would go out of business."

One good line does not a series make.

So far, it has been the only memorable one. This Entertainment Weekly review, though, has a number of other groaners, including:

Marcus Jackson: “I have the ability to coerce any man, regardless of his sexuality. Just last week, I ate a hot dog at a food court and four gay men gave me a standing ovation.”
Allen Braddock: “I am confident the court will approve… but you be the judge.”
Judge:
“I AM the judge, you fool!”
Marcus Jackson's mother: “You know, I’ve always fancied the idea of having two men… one to cook, and one to clean!”
That's comedy, um, gold?

The first is homophobic in an odd way.

The second was actually implemented with perfect timing.

The third is non nondescript.

...

I'm wondering if this is payment?

They asked to do a dream project, that they are not allowed to begin that until this shite is locked down.

...

Although FX must have figured out that this show was worse than they thought, which is why they are airing two episodes every week. That is not a healthy way to dispense a valuable commodity considering how they generate profit.

Extant is also double episodes for the next two weeks... And Defiance too...

Is something odd happening in America?

Maybe a sporting event?

I'm not sure. It would seem, on the surface at least, that they're trying to honor their contract, but through the fastest way possible.

I watched two episodes. It's terrible. I think you describe it best when you say it's like a Nickelodeon show. It looks like it came straight out of the 90's. And it's not funny. I don't think I laughed during either episode.

I haven't seen the show yet, just the commercials, but from what I've read in this thread I would be better off watching Bosom Buddies for the 26th time. Now that show was funny.

The first episode left me cold. So I gave it a second chance, and then a third, and a fourth, and a fifth, and I've yet to actually laugh.

I watch Kelsey, and I watch Martin, and I just cross my fingers that their personalities will break through the horrible writing, but it's just not happening. I keep giving it chances because I adore Kelsey Grammer.

As Guy mentioned above, they cancelled Boss but this show was greenlit? That's some crap right there, and a criminal underuse of Grammer's considerable talent.

Bosom Buddies is a far, far superior show to this one.

Martin is a 49 year old man that looks like he is 59, so why do they keep setting him up (twice at least?) with stunning, intelligent 25 year old black women?

Demographics, probably. They want to grab audience members who like Martin's comedy, but want some eye candy, too, which is why most well known funny guys who get their own shows also get really hot wives or girlfriends. Doesn't matter what the guy looks like, the wife/girlfriend will always be very attractive.

Stunning, yes, stunning is required for TV... But consistently black on black makes me think that I am watching something from the 80s or 70s... Did Telma ever make out with Tom or Peter in a very special of Bosom Buddies?

Not that I can recall. :p
