Has anyone else seen this? It opened in select cities this weekend, so I was able to catch it with some friends (it will presumably open nationwide soon).
It's getting a lot of hype for being truly frightening, to the point of people leaving the theaters a la The Exorcist because it's too damn scary. It's also been strongly compared to The Blair Witch Project.
Paranormal Activity is a $15,000 independently made horror film about "recovered" footage from a couple who begin to experience terrors in their house when they fall asleep, so they purchase a video camera to record these disturbances. The film is shot entirely with a video camera and done in a verite style similiar to Cloverfield.
My personal reaction to the movie was that like a lot of "hyped up" horror movies like the aforementioned Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield it IS extremely overhyped but my friends and I were literally scared and petrified for hours after the movie opened.
In fact, I spent the night at my friend's house after we caught the flick last night and during the night while we were in his kitchen -- not that far from his garage -- tools were stolen from his garage. It was extremely creepy.
Steven Spielberg, who saw the film before its release and even recommended a new ending for the film which they shot and used, said when he saw the film and he thought it was "haunted", and that the locks to his bedroom locked by themselves after viewing the movie and it required a locksmith to open them.
Freaky stuff. Anybody else seen this yet?
