"Parallels" on Netflix

SAndrews10

I thought I'd seen a thread on this before, but didn't see it if there was. Anyways, has anyone seen this? It came out in March, stumbled upon it over the weekend and it was great. Without being too spoilery, kind of had a "Sliders" feel and unfortunately it's open ended and leaves you wanting more because apparently it was made as pilot for a potential series and then just released as a movie. Shame though, but worth a watch.

The hot little teen Asian scam artist is now the ball busting 30something suburban helicopter smother on Fresh Off the Boat (Wonder Years rip off, set in the early 90s with a Chinese American family.).

So, yeah, that ship has sailed.

It's definitely 3 episodes of something, and I liked it, but they resolved too much at the end that should have happened 15 episodes later. They must have been warned quite early on that this thing was never going to series.

Same thing happened with Doorways, a sliders-like pilot that got turned into a movie 20 years ago.

Doorways was the job that convinced George R R Martin to give up TV and work full time on "A Game of Thrones"

I watched it, going into it I knew what that it was an aborted show. Reminded me of Sliders and Fringe, and FWIW the lead guy was ho-ot.

It definitely had potential.

I saw this a few weeks ago and really liked it. An interesting set of characters with some exciting hooks. The show runner/creator wants to make more so I hope that happens, as unlikely as that seems. Syfy could have picked this up. Why was it pitched it to FOX?

Fox has a tendency to give such shows a first-season order (even if they do get cancelled earlier than fans would like) For instance, AntonyF points out similarities to Sliders and Fringe. Both shows started on Fox.

It seems that a lot of show runners want their shows on major networks like NBC, CBS, etc. and I've always wondered why, given that they're more likely to get cancelled without super high numbers. FOX may give these things a chance but it's still one of those networks.

The people that made this show made one of my all-time favorite mini-series, The Lost Room. Okay, yes, I may have been the only person to really like this series, but it was one of the most creative concepts I'd seen in a long time. Because of that pedigree I watched Parallels. I enjoyed it, but not quite as much as The Lost Room.

I liked it too for that very reason. It was also supposed to be a show but it never got picked up.

About half way through I picked up on the fact it was a show premise- it was an interesting take on the Sliders concept and had potential. I do wish they had wrapped it up better than leaving things to be resolved in the next episode.
