Painting of the U.S.S. Enterprise in Generations

Hello everyone,

in Generations Kirk has a beautiful painting of the original Enterprise in his cabin. I'm pretty sure that I saw this painting in its full glory in one of the behind-the-scenes books. Does anybody have a clear picture of it? You can see a glimpse of it in this screenshot from Trekcore - left side, right down the bat'leth (and by the way: was there ever a book or story that explained why Kirk would have a connection to a bat'leth?!)

It's a two-page spread at the back of THE ART OF STAR TREK. Pretty sure it was done by ILM's John Knoll.

Kirk collected weapons from various cultures. He had a collection of guns and rifles in his San Francisco apartment seen in TWOK and TSFS.

It looks like Kirk was collecting a variety of weapons, maybe he just liked the bat'leth rather than having any connection to it.

Yep. Looks to me like a still of the model that was run thought a watercolor painting photoshop filter. It was certainly meant for the background.

Was there ever a book or story that explained why Kirk would have a connection to a bat'leth?!

Not that I'm aware of it, but I'd guess it was related to events in ST VI.
This brings up the question - supposedly General Chang owned a bat'leth - what happened to it after his defeat.

Now, naval tradition of the 18th Century had it that passing your sword to the enemy captain was a clear sign of surrender.
I don't know / remember whether the Klingons had a similar tradition, but since Kirk had actually defeated General Chang and company, it wouldn't surprise me that Kirk had received his bat'leth from Chang's family.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts. @ Bob: I like the connection to TUD but maybe there could be a little twist. So, what if ... ... the bat'leth was a personal gift of Azetbur to honor Kirk for his role in the peace talks ... this act was used by the conservative powers in the empire who tried to bring down Azetbur to stigmatize her as a traitor of the klingon people ... and after a regime change the high council issued a law that women are prohibited from becoming chancellor So this little bat'leth could be used to explain the contradiction between TUD und TNG concerning the role of women in klingon politics and would even further strengthen the klingon/russian-analogy: russia went from Gorbatschow to the hardliner Putin, the relations between Russia and the USA are tensed, but way better than during the cold war Pocket Books, your turn ;-) PS: I just realized that Serpents Among the Ruins already dealed with my last point... But hey, just ad my theory ;-)

I would imagine Chang's Bat'leth likely went boom with his Bird of Prey, although he could have had more than one.

I like the idea it could have been Azetbur who gave him it as that would mean it was Gorkons.

This cabin is Kirk's, from around 2281 (where he briefly retired).

So it can't be from that - he said he sold it off and went back to Starfleet.

Well, Kirk is in the Nexus so the interior of his cabin might be different from the real one and contain items that are important to him, regardless when he acquired them. Nonetheless, the whole implementation of the "Nexus concept" is plain stupid because Kirk always expressed that his best time was aboard the Enterprise. And when the Nexus allows him to be everywhere and with everybody he chooses a freaking cabin in the woods and a woman we have never heard of before *absolutely noncredible* Have him on the bridge of the old Enterprise, reminiscing his old adventures like Scotty in "Relics". You could even show him alone and use this as a plot point because it's a sign of his subconsciousness that something is wrong.

^^ I couldn't agree more. Unless he really got addicted to mountain climbing and this cabin was just closeby.
According to the other scenes in ST VII it would appear that you can't be captain of a starship until you can ride a horse: Pike did it, Kirk did it and Picard did it.

I'm confident that Abramsverse will establish you first need to be capable to drive a car before you can even apply for captaincy.

And he did this when? Maybe diving on the sunken hulk of the Bounty between movies while the E-A was being Edselfied?

Doesn't fit timewise with when he owned the cabin either, though that nit doesn't seem worth picking at too hard.
