Spoilers Pacific Rim: Uprising

I never saw the first one in the theater as I didn't expect much from it (giant robots fighting giant monsters... whatever...). After watching it at home, I kicked myself for not seeing it on the big screen. It was probably the funnest movies of 2013. I'll definitely be in the theater for this one.

It was a lot of fun seeing it in the theater. :D I got it on DVD afterwards and my brother and I both feel it's a bit better than the most recently Godzilla movie (2014, which we saw together in the theaters). The tie-in comics (Tales From Year Zero and Tales From The Drift) are nice too. The thing I like about the first film is that it doesn't have to be a super deep movie, because it's clearly a homage to the genre and wants to have fun. I think it succeeds pretty well with that. It has enough good plot elements and cast to make the silliness tye together (IMO).

I suppose part of my concern is that Del Toro isn't directing this one, and that can make a significant difference. That's not to suggest that Steven DeKnight won't do a good job, by any means, but I like Del Toro's work and he's someone I've come to respect a lot in the genre. I don't really have much prior experience with DeKnight's work on television, so we'll see what happens.

I loved the first season of Daredevil, which DeKnight was in charge of, and I like what I've seen of Spartacus, so I'm not to concerned. Spartacus did overdo the sex and nudity a bit at times, but since this is only PG-13, I don't see it being a problem with Uprising.

I keep meaning to get around to watching Spartacus on Netflix, since I gather it has a number of Arrowverse actors (and, yeah, for the nudity). But I'm hesitant because of the graphic violence and gore that I've seen in its trailers.

Spartacus is highly stylised pornographic entertainment from top to bottom. From the excesses of the sex scenes to the severity of the violence and gore. Somehow though, the politicking and characterisation balances all of that out.

It should not work in any way shape or form. But DeKnight found a unique balance that mellowed the excesses, found humour in the politics and crafted some of the most wonderful arch characters in modern TV. It's like blending Dallas, a raft of Disney villains, Zack Snyder, Ken Russell and David Milch into one glorious technicoloured soup.

But the violence and gore is extreme at times. There is one moment in the prequel series that is both utterly horrifying and oddly beautiful in its rendering. But even I, a non-squeemish fell, winced, covered my eyes and uttered "oh geez, really?"

Plus the first 3-4 episodes are so rough that you'd be forgiven for thinking any fans of the show to be crazy to believe it's good.

Hugo - It may not be for you.
