p90x... here goes nothing

Just coming up on the end of week one.

I am very sore. Hungry all the time. Uncharacteristically irritable. I have rapidly shed weight like it's my job -- and because I work a ton, I've have to get up at 5:30am to do the workouts (and plan to until I finish all 90 days).

I am doing a very similar diet to what they recommend with the program.

Has anyone done this before? It's definitely fun, but I already miss IPAs and cheeseburgers :).

Wish me luck...

For what it's worth, hops encourage protein synthesis, which can lead to muscle growth. IPAs are good for you! :p

I tried P90X several years ago, but I hated it. I've been weightlifting forever, though, and the style of workouts in P90X just didn't appeal to me. I'd rather deadlift 500 lbs than do a billion push-ups.

Also, plyometrics can suck a big D.

It sounds like a massive pain in the ass, but it's good to hear a somewhat positive testimonial. Glad to hear it works. I may try it once I get totally bored with hum drum cardio machines.

Oh, and best of luck!

My personal feeling is that any workout plan or diet plan with a name shouldn't be trusted.

I came to a fitness plan that worked for me by listening to a lot of different people and reading a lot of different articles and picking and choosing the parts of each that work for me, my current ability, my schedule, my needs and my goals.

If p90x is working for you, that's great, but remember if you want the effects to be permanent you can't only do them for 90 days. :)

I think it works but I hated it with a passion. You can only watch the same DVD so many times and the YOGA one was over an hour. Bored me to tears.

That's totally fair. I played football growing up and I'm no stranger to a squat rack and bench, but totally lost it in my late 20s with desk jobs and long hours (and who doesn't love personal pizzas and 6 IPAs :)). As for the alcohol thing, I'm going to give it up for 90 days and then enjoy a Stone Imperial Russian Stout when I finish in December...

Pyometrics kicked my ass :). But bottom line, I really don't care for being in a gym.

It's a good fit for me. I travel a lot, work long days/weeks (mostly in front of a computer but sometimes at busy photo and video shoots) -- and p90x I can kick out in any hotel gym.

Definitely! That's what my cousin did after he finished p90x. He remembered the workouts he really enjoyed and cut out the rest -- but said the workout videos were a great kicking off point. That's my goal here -- is to put myself through a kind of "boot camp", develop a better relationship with food and then start a more active and healthy lifestyle.

The good thing is that my best buddy and roommate is doing it with me every morning. There's a huge added motivation when you have two alarms going off at 5:30am, you're sharing the set up and breakdown, the diet etc. -- so that definitely helps with the boredom.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm going to kick this program's ass and finish all 90 days come rain or spears.

Through to the second week!!

I feel great.

Given that I tend to work 10-11 hour days, I thought I'd be really dragging at work with the 5:30am wakeup time, but with the complete elimination of alcohol and bad foods I don't feel that normal tinge of "ughhh" that I tend to get in the morning.

I'm hungry a lot -- but eating a ton. Yesterday I hit a local buffet for baked salmon and vegetables, eating omelets in the morning, quinoa or pork/steak/chicken at night. I'm basically eating like a king.

Onward!!

I'm currently finishing up the first month of P90X3. I'm already within several pounds of my post-summer goal weight so I haven't modified my caloric intake (I'm at net 1200 including eating back anything burned in exercise) but I gather I should be eating more per the diet plan I'm not following.

I recently finished the T25 workouts (also from the same company) and enjoyed 'em. Like you, I'm desk-bound for most of the day and with a family at home to worry about as well, I find myself waking up at 5am to do the workout plus at least 45 minutes on the treadmill, which is otherwise my nominal workout (adding in pullup circuits every other day). P90X3 concentrates the workout into 30 minutes (plus a few more for cooldown and Tony Horton's yammering on) which works for me.

I find that the workouts in the morning do a LOT for the energy level during the day. Before I started I'd be nodding off by late afternoon regardless of how much caffeine I'd consumed; now I'm alert and going strong until I hit the hay. That alone makes this worth it.

Yay, fitness! And yay, for your own results so far!

I have found the same thing! I'm intrigued by P90X3 and I'm thinking of doing it starting in January (since I'll finish P90X in December -- depending on how I feel). Would you recommend it?

I've been pretty crazy about the diet... I can eat protein, vegetables, complex carbs (and not much of those). That is it -- but I have to say... I've been eating like a king.

Since changing my diet last year I've dropped from 230 and I'm currently at 182... which is a bit of a change:

Glad to hear good things about P90X3! Agree about morning workouts. I wouldn't do them, otherwise.

Alas, I've got a 404 for your links.. If you want to see what I've been doing though:

I started week five of P90X3 today, and already I can tell there will be a significant jump in difficulty / exertion. Not QUITE sure on recommending it for anyone, as it requires a larger commitment than other programs I've tried - I tend to prefer a less frantic workout regime (I don't believe in quick-fix results, preferring a slow burn route to fitness), but I appreciate the focus these shorter workouts, if that makes any sense. The last one I did was T25 and that was great.

P90X3 works with three weeks of identical workouts followed by a week of "easier" workouts focused on agility and balance, at which I have always been terrible. I'm sticking to it though even knowing that I won't be advancing much on that front; if you're looking for a good (and quick!) mixed workout regime then this one could be right for you.

If I'm lucky, I'll finish this one before Christmas and after a couple weeks "off" (meaning simple treadmill and mixed pullup / strength exercises), I'll be back in 2015 with another program. Beachbody is coming out with "Insanity Max 30" at that time, shrinking Shaun T's popular Insanity workouts into the 30-minute frame. I might try that, or possibly work a bit more on the lower half in a (futile?) attempt to sculpt a bit more below the belt. I know spot fat reduction is pure science-fiction, but I certainly wouldn't mind being a bit more muscular in the legs & bum if my fat percentage ever DOES get that low.
