Oyster now has TrekLit!

Bonzo the Fifth

In case anyone isn't familiar with Oyster, it's a subscription eBook service.

https://www.oysterbooks.com/

I got an email today saying they'd just signed S&S as a publisher to supply their books. Naturally I checked to see if there were any Trek offerings. HOLLY CARP, they seem to have almost everything.

Is anyone else using this service? How about the authors? Do you guys get enough kickback from this that I don't have to feel bad about reading books through this service?

Thoughts?

Also, apologies if this has been brought up already. Didn't see a thread on the first couple of pages, so I assume no ones brought this up already.

so I guess non-members will have to take your word for it since the site doesn't seem to have a search function for them?

It is a little irritating that the site has no information about anything unless you sign up.

Also it seems that Oyster is only available to Iphone/Ipad users. Kind of important to know as well.

I'm told that the Simon & Schuster backlist is now also available from the Scribd digital subscription service, which apparently works on Windows, iOS, Android, Kindle, and Nook devices.

Thanks Christopher! I'm an Android man myself and so I will check that out for sure.

It is indeed now available on Scribd, and I've read 5 Trek novels in the last 2-3 days, including one of yours if I'm not mistaken. I can read them on my computer, my iPhone, and my Nook HD+ tablet.

Thank you for providing this information. It was enough to make me decide to give Scribd another try as there is a loooot of Trek that I would love to read or re-read and while there's a lot that I will end up owning it's nice to be able to give multiple books from many publishers a whirl for about what I pay per month for Netflix.

How current are Oyster/Scribd? Do they have One Constant Star already?

It's all backlist, so nope at least for Scribd, and I'd expect the same for Oyster.

Scribd's search/sort is pretty abysmal, so I can't easily find books in order, but it's looking like they've got nothing less than about a year old or so. I'm enjoying it, but I've also got an extended free trial through being a Smashwords author, so the money isn't a factor.

DCR is correct, however it's not as far out of date as it could be. For example Scribd has the Cold Equations trilogy.

I agree about the search/sort being more than a bit rough but I've seen worse. My pet peeve is that while it is nice that you can download titles to your device (Kindle Fire in my case) you can only "keep" so many. Which I don't have a problem with, but I wish the limits were spelled out up front and that there was a way to lock a title, or that when you were at your limit and you tried to add a new one it would ask you to pick a title to "delete". Still over all I think it's a great idea and I suspect may very well be the way that books will be going, much as music and video has.

Do they have a version to sideload, did you jailbreak, or does the Amazon version work for you (because it's showing as incompatible with my Kindle Fire)?

Sorry I'm not up on all the jargon so if my reply seems insipid that's why. Basically on my version of the Kindle Fire (HDX to be specific) I have it set to allow me to use 3rd party apps. Sadly I still can't use Google Play but I can download the app directly from Scribd's website and then install it. It took a little while for the system to acknowledge that the app existed (For a while at first I had to use the search feature to find it again) but now it's on the home screen right along with all the other apps and so far has given me no problems.

Thanks - that's exactly what I was looking for. (That's what I referred to as "sideloading". Unfortunately, many app developers, even when their app is free, only put it on the Google Play store and don't make it available for download. I'm glad to hear that Scribd is an exception.)

Hasn't eReader gone out of business? That's the format I had a few books in, and a while back I got an e-mail offering me a chance to convert them to Nook format before they stopped being offered in eReader, and I missed the window because I was too busy with other stuff. So now I'll no longer be able to transfer those books to a new computer when I replace my current one.
