Overrated "Cult" Movies

You know which ones I'm talking about. The "Hidden Gem" that ain't. That movie that your friend slams you into his spare Barcalounger, slots his well-worn VHS copy into the machine, and says "Dude -- ya gotta see this!" And it's two hours of your life you'll never get back.

For me..

Heathers. If I had a dollar for every time somebody said, "This is a great dark comedy!" I could retire to the Caymans. Apparently, Dark Comedy is a code-word for "It ain't funny, just weird and makes you uncomfortable."

OK, post your own examples, or refute my review. On your mark...

Pink Floyd's The Wall.

What a bunch of pretentious crap. Good music, bad movie.

Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Same as above, but even more pretentious. The plot, such as it is, can be summed up in this phrase: A bunch of perverts dance to rock music while the audience yells back random stuff. The end.

the rocky horror pictureshow.

what a crapfest.

edit: I see Babaganoosh beat me to the punch.

"The Princess Bride"

Just don't get it. It is supposed to be all clever and post modern and stuff but "clever and post modern" most times means "random and silly" to me. Plus I really don't care for Billy Crystal.

Lord of the Rings

It seems some of my friends are absolutely shocked that I don't like either three movies and think Peter Jackson (Who the hell is he anyway) is a hack director that has good special effects and some good character work but that's about it.

I'm not sure if I'd call a franchise that grossed over $1 billion "cult", but suit yourself...

Anyway, I second the RHPS nominations. I just never got it.

Yeah after I wrote it I was thinking about the definition of cult and LOTR might not qualify. Still, the genre it is in does seem like a big cult following (The whole fantasy thing) in a sense which was why I put it down. Still, you're probably right that it's not what this thread was looking for.

I have a better cult movie and I know this one will fit. What about Easy Rider. The soundtrack is great, but I think you really need to be high just to understand what the heck is going on. The ending is so weird that it makes the movie not all that terrific.

Once again I see that some so-called geeks are turning into heretics!
Please leave.

:p

But I agree with Sixteen Candles (but NOT the Breakfast Club!!)

^The books are a lot more fun.

I'd have to go with Legend and Highlander. My best friend raves about both and I just don't get it. I might give Highlander another try because I don't really remember it.

^^^
I think movies like that can only be really enjoyed if you watched them 20 years ago already when you were a kid. ;)
Otherwise they just seem incredibly cheesy now.

Another vote for Legend. I tried watching the directors cut a couple of years ago and it bored the piss out of me. I turned it off about halfway through.

RHPS is fun up through the end of 'Sweet Transvestite'. then it just gets boring and silly. At least the crowd comments keep it interesting.

My big one though is This Is Spinal Tap. People keep raving about it, but I remember watching it and never once even cracking a smile. Dull, dull, dull! One of the few dvd's that I've sold.
