[OT] I'm supposed to pray for Patrick Stewart?

Every once in awhile I got to christiananswers.net to look at reviews of movies I've seen recently for a laugh. They give scores not only on movie quality but also on moral rating. For some reason most of the movies I like end up being rated varying degrees of offensive to them. I was looking up The Reader and I noticed about a third of the way down the page one of the subjects of "Today's prayer focus" is Patrick Stewart. I'm supposed to pray for him.

Patrick Stewart, actor, producer, director — “X-Men,” “X2,” “Star Trek: First Contact,” “Star Trek: Nemesis”
Please take a moment now to pray for these influential people (prayer suggestions). Don’t just complain about “Hollywood,” PRAY for these influential people.

Not that I attribute any real-world effect to prayer, but why are we being asked to pray for Patrick Stewart? Has he come down with an illness I'm not aware of?

I often use the same tactic when it comes to B-movies and straight-to-DVD flicks. These sites are so anal about cataloguing every moral trespass, they inadvertently make a good guide to knowing whether such a film has enough sex and violence to make a viewing worthwhile.

So? Praying for those who people look up to isnt a BAD thing. Theyre not saying "pray TO him."

No, but they're saying that he's an immoral person that good Christians should pray to God will reform and become a Good Christian (TM).

I gather that it's simply calling for prayer for specific influential individuals in our society. Not really anything new, the idea of praying for cultural leaders has existed for ages. They've just added the random nature of a "celebrity of the week" to the equation.

How could someone who believed another person's inner disposition and outward actions where leading that person down a path that would result in unending and infinite sadness and pain not want to do something about it?

I'll be praying for everyone here who thinks that website is totally offbase.

Just fyi... Christians don't just pray for the salvation of someone's soul... they pray for those in positions of power, influence and role models that they would make good decisions and make good decisions for the good of those who look up to them... they are in important positions and people in positions like that have a lot of stress and people that look up to them, and a little divine help wouldn't hurt I'm sure.

The point is, it's actually an act of condemnation blanketed in piety. Saying "You're an evil person but I'm going to pray that you change your ways or at least that God will spare your soul from the Hell you've brought on yourself" is actually an insult. Truly moral people don't condemn those they disagree with as evil.

Christopher, it can be what you say. Certainly there are those out there who qualify those who aren't Christians in such a way. However, you need to know that groups like this, who ask Christians to pray for certain people will also ask them to pray for Christians in that subset. For example, in an entertainment-based prayer request, they might ask for prayer for Patrick Stewart on the one side, and ask for prayer for someone like Martin Sheen (who is an outspoken Christian) on the other side. What is prayed for that person is up to the pray-er. Often, as a previous poster commented, you are praying that the person will make wise decisions. Often, you are praying that they would know that God loves them. There's no hard and fast rule to this.

In this context, yes that's entirely true. I doubt anyone involved has the intention of literally praying for Patrick Stewart. It's a dumb thing Christians like to do, you say "pray for so-and-so" and then the other person is supposed to say "oh why?" and then you say nasty things about the person but it's a PRAYER REQUEST NOT GOSSIP. Christians can be the dumbest people on the planet sometimes but I'm happy to be one of them.

"And lo, the turbolift doors didst open to reveal Patrick Stewart tending 12 score oxen in the same field..."

Book of Jean Luc, 2:16

In related news, I lost a sock in the drier last week. I'm fairly certain it's that interdimensional reptilian Hillary Clinton-lookalike who lives in my toaster when I'm not looking, but the joke's on it because I've used my mental powers to place a shrinkage spell on the sock; let's see it try to catch werewolves to drink their lymph while hopping on one foot!

"Yes, Captain, what you do on the holodeck in your spare time is your own business... but, come on, that's just fucked up."

When I was at teachers college in the 70s, the Christian group told me they were praying for me. Because I was... Catholic.

"But Catholics are Christians," I said.

"We'll be praying for you," they replied.

Irrelevance and irreverence combined! There must be a couple of mods fighting it out over who gets to smite the heathens and lock the topic. (I've noticed that at least one or two mods will shut down even relevant topics in some forums here if they get too anti-religious.)
