Original Idea for the Jem'Hadar

Might the genesis for the idea for the Jem'Hadar soldiers have come from the character in Predator? Many similarities.

^ I believe that the Hirogen and the Hunters of Tosk were based on the Predator, but I don't think that the Jem'Hadar were.

Photon,

Well, I can see how you can come to that conclusion. They had a similar ability to cloak themselves. But I think that's where the similiarity ends. The hunter-being in "Predator" seemed to enjoy hunting things down, while for the Jea'Hadar, it's more a matter of duty, although they did often express happiness at killing their enemies, and disappointment when they didn't encounter Klingons.

But I think there was a nod to "Predator" in the VOY ep that first introduced the Hirogen. I think one of the trophies was the head of the one of the Predator-people, if I recall correctly.

In my opinion there arnt that many similarities between the Predators and the Jem'Hadar or Hirogen, completely different with the only similarity being that the hirogen like to hunt and the Jem'Hadar like to fight.

Mike Westmore said he was inspired by a rhinoceros for the overall "look" of the Jem'Hadar.

The pilot episode of TNG (I think? it's been a while) had a drug-addicted human soldier from the 22nd C or so - he kept inhaling a drug from a tube near his neck. Anyone remember this? He seemed like a prototype for the Jems.

Temis: Yes, I thought it was a fascinating idea, one I hope they explore in a novel. I also think the drug-controlled post-atomic soldier might have been influenced by the future soldier in the short story "Soldier" hy Harlan Ellison -- wasn't he also controlled by drugs? Been awhile since I've read the story. -- Red Ranger

My feeling is that the Jem’Hadar was independent of any other species. It may have been a mix of a number of species (star trek and others) but it was clear they were different. If I was going to make a leap of faith to pick a model of the Jem’Hadar I would have to look at the episodes of SG1 to find anyone that is just as close.

The Jem'Hadar IMO were a pretty compelling entrant into the ST franchise, and I like how they designed them, gave individual character personalities, the special relationship with the Vorta, etc.

Of course, I always wondered what could have been done if ST-constraints were removed, for instance having them not be humanoid (although the rhino comparison was a pretty good one). If the Founders truly wanted to create the ultimate, most fearsome and effective fighting force, I think they could have bioengineered much more than what they ended up with...or maybe they did have more of an attrition/save resources model which resulted in a more humanoid-style, controllable footsoldier.

However, imagine if for instance the Xenomorphs from the Aliens series were used ("the ultinate biological weapon")...and there were no easy weaknesses (for some reason later on Dominion clones, Vorta and Jem'Hadar, could sometimes be killed with a twist of the neck). I would have also liked to see the full Dominion potential, more than just 3 species, showcased as a full "anti-Federation."

Anyhow, they were pretty effective, it's just that the line "and then they send in the Jem'Hadar" from Vorta Eris implied all sorts of menacing creatures. Especially when compared to those throughout the scifi universe.

In another ST-constraint, I'm guessing that it ended up being that Klingon warriors are about equal or close to Jem'Hadar soldiers, given the added gravitas and weight the former have in the ST mythos.

I don't think those were ST constraints, unless by "ST constraints" you mean budget or anything.
