Lets be honest here, Starfleet Battle Tactics when taught at the Academy consist of one 10 minute lecture:-
Instructor: "So Cadet, your Galaxy-Class starship is at at Red alert, all shields are raised and all weapons systems are manned and ready. Suddenly a Klingon Vor-Cha attack cruiser decloaks in front of you and fires a broadside into you. What is your first action?"
Cadet: "Clutch onto my seat and roll around a bit?"
Instructor: "Correct, the Klingon vessel fires another barrage; now what?"
Cadet: "Ask my Tactical officer for the shield status?"
Instructor: "Very good, I would have also accepted "Ask for a damage report". You are hit be another broadside..."
Cadet: "Ah! I know this one! I fire one shot, from one phaser array, which strikes the enemy vessel and then repeat the entire cycle until one of us is destroyed. At no point do I lay into the opposition with a full barrage of phaser arrays and/or photon torpedoes.."
Instructor: "And why not?"
Cadet: "It's not the Starfleet way sir!"
Instructor <mutters to self>: "This kid could make Admiral...."
