Orci: The Film is almost finished.

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman told Sci Fi Wire that the movie is just about done and almost ready to be put on the shelf until May.

"[We're] so close to being done, and we've almost ... finished the bomb shelter where we're going to hide the movie," Orci said with tongue in cheek in a telephone interview over the weekend....

..."A general audience is going to see a totally different movie," Orci added. "A general audience is going to see a movie of how these historic characters met and how they all came together. ... If you're a fan, it's a re-introduction to Star Trek, and if you're not, it's an introduction....

I wonder if he meant the "Final Final" edits have been done and the film is ready to make the "Release Prints" (the ones that will eventually go to theaters), or if there is still a chance to tweak things?

I wonder if Abrams wakes up some December morning with some tremedous revelation the will make the film better, would he have the chance to include that idea?

Then again I know from my own work experience that sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone, and going back to change things sometimes makes for a lesser quality product than if it wasn't changed.

On a serious note though, I wonder how it could be this close to being done and ready to be, as Orci put it, 'put on the shelf until May'.

Just a few weeks back, we have J.J. saying that they had only about twelve percent of the FX completed and in place, now suddenly the film is almost finished? How is that possible? Or is Orci just referring to the editing of the primary footage, with or without all of the completed visuals?

Either way, I don't want to wait until next May!

I don't imagine that it's near that. Based on something Abrams said a week or two ago, I think it probably simply means that Abrams is close to a final edit that he's satisfied with. It almost certainly doesn't contain all the finished effects work, and probably is not scored or mixed.

Indeed. There's still plenty of post-work to be done to the film. I suspect the f/x work and the music won't be done for a couple of months at least.

Forgot about that one. Yep, it's in there. Also included is some footage of a Minuteman missile launching, and a nice shot of a Saturn V stage separation in Earth orbit. They're really going balls-out on this one!
