Opinions on some novels

I've been thinking about getting some Trek novels and my eyes have fallen on the Voyager novels Spirit Walk and the Next Generation novel Battle of Betazed. I was wondering what people's thoughts were on these books. Does anyone have them? How are they?

The Battle of Betazed is quite nice, not the best story about the Dominion War, but quite entertaining.

The Spirit Walk-Duology on the other hand almost bored me to death, imo these are among the worst Trek-books in the last 10 years.

I read both of these about a month ago. I was pleasantly surprised by The Battle of Betazed. I don't know why, but I didn't have particularly high hopes for it but I thought it was very entertaining. Don't skip that one.

The Spirit Walk duology didn't do much for me, I have to say. It wasn't awful, really, just pretty forgettable - in fact I'm kind of blanking on parts of it already. I didn't completely buy some story elements. Again, I wouldn't say skip it, mostly because I'm not skipping any of them, but I really wasn't impressed.

A little unrelated to your question, but I read Immortal Coil the day before I read Battle of Betazed, so in my mind I've got some weird connection between the two. I thought Immortal Coil was very good, too, so I'd recommend that one if it's an option for you, especially if you're a TOS fan. If not, you may not enjoy it as much.

Either way, definitely read Battle of Betazed.

The Battle of Betazed is an OK book. I had been expecting more from a TNG Dominion War story that guest-starred Elias Vaungh besides, and it fell somewhat short from those high expectations, but that aside it's still a competant book, and a story worth telling.

Spirit Walk, on the other hand, is an outright abomination that ought to be avoided like a particularly virulent strain of the bubonic plague. Coincidentally, another guest character from Battle of Betazed is actually carried forward into Spirit Walk.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

I can only agree with those who have already posted. Battle of Betazed isn't spectacular, but it is a good entertaining book.

The Spirit Walk books on the other hand are awful and really some of the dark spots in Trek's more recent literature history.

What attracted me to the Spirit Walk books was the mention of a Founder involved and Crell Moset I think his name was but if its that bad then might just skip it.

You're going to be very hard pressed to find love for any of Voyager's relaunch books around here. I however didn't hate them, but I do agree that they aren't as good as most of the other books of the last several years. (To me being the worst of the best is still high praise.)

As for the reasons you are interested in the books, I'd say you might be disappointed with them. Moset is not a very major player and without spoilers I can't say too much about the "Founder" but that's not quite what you'd expect either. I am personally not of the opinion that the alleged "Founder" is a Founder at all -- the book led you to believe it might or even could be, but I don't think it specified specifically.

The Battle of Betazed I thought was great. I hated Troi on TNG and was very apprehensive about this book when I read it (only read it because I wanted Dominion War stories) and this book wrote Troi excellently and made her a good character.

Oh? I can't remember who you're talking about (then again, I've tried to not think about the Spirit Walk duology).

I thought Battle of Betazed was very good (then again, that's generally my response to most Trek Lit) and written well.

The Spirit Walk books, on the other hand, should definitely be avoided. I barely managed to get through the first one (wanting to throttle that groziting counselor) and I skipped straight to the end of the second one. And while I'm tentatively waiting to see how it resolves itself, it's safe to say that I'll wait quite a while.

Hmm well thanks guys, not going to pick Spirit Walk and might just go for Battle of Betazed instead. Does that cover the Dominion's perspective in the battle or it almost entirely Betazoid and Federation?

It sort of alternates in regards to scene and viewpoint, but for the most part it deals with the Beatzoids and the Federation

Crap. The Spirit Walk books are in my to-read pile (admittedly on the bottom, as I try to catch up on years of DS9 novels). Just great. I gotta' remember to stop coming to this particular forum! It ALWAYS ruins or spoils at least one book I haven't read yet! *argh*

What? There were no spoilers in this thread for Spirit Walk.

Might be my mention of Moset and a Founder being involved :(
Uh, folks... All of these facts are mentioned in the cover blurb for Enemy of my Enemy. If you're that spoiler-phobic, we can't possibly discuss the content of the books, which means that reasonable people can't gauge any potential interest in the story.

Moset is pictured on the freakin' cover, fer cryin' out loud...

Just recently went through Battle of Betazed and man, what a quick read. I literally burned through it in a couple of reading sessions over a day. The page count is low, and the font/spacing seem to be a bit bigger than what I've gotten used to with the DS9 Relaunch, Forged in Fire, and much of recent more expansive Trek lit.

All that having been said, it's a fun little romp. It's nice to have Vaughn in the book and he has some nice moments with Troi. Having read Art of the Impossible recently as well, I appreciated these that much more. The action is all well and good, Crell Moset is used well and sufficiently creepy (although he was far more disturbing in the Terok Nor books, I thought) and overall I think it's a good, quick action-y read.
