ty very much all! Finding the right look for the inner surface was a bit of a pain, and it's actually twice as wide as the one in the book, 2 million miles wide instead of one. :D

I have to ask - is this set up so that the black panes are actually casting rendered shadows on the Ringworld? If so I'm terribly impressed.

Yes it is... they're actual shadow squares. :D

That was the pain, several texture tries that looked good in the lighted parts didn't get dark enough in the shadowed parts.

Because I love universe crossovers (or coincides, I guess in this case, would be a better description), I'm loving this idea, and the Ambassador model is indeed wonderful, and really adds to the scene. The problem here occurs with the update.

We all know that the Enterprise-C was destroyed in 2344, right? And the U.S.S. Nebula was probably built in the same decade, but the Enterprise would have likely only encountered her while she was under construction. Not even the Nebula herself would have been active at the time, much less other examples of the class.

I can understand why you would want to use more than one class, though you probably should have looked for something somewhat earlier.

I wondered about that timing w/o looking it up lol... There actually aren't many models from that era. It would work if I just swapped out the E-C for another name, then... the Ambassadors would still work, just not Cap'n Garrett and company.

I'm swapping to Sakharov. Ty for the tip.

My only big suggestion would be to sell the scale better with more of a difference between the far side and the close, either by scaling up the model quite a bit or 'scaling down' the camera. Right now the thickness of the ring looks about even all the way around. When we're talking about measurements in the range of AU, there should definitely be a notable difference.

^^I'm rendering a different perspective now which will help give that sense of scale, I think... :D

I'm actually doing 2 now, adjusting the background as Venardhi suggested [it's going to look a lot better that way, ty!] and another angle which will make the Ringworld more central as well.

It's harder to make it look good the closer you get -- it's just so frakking big.
