Opera Browser Version 10 preview

Pretty Sweet. Seems to render pages very very quickly.
I love Opera. Been using it for about 2 years now on my PC and on my mobile.

While I'll wait for the final release, I will certainly get it. Opera has been my alternative to IE for many years. I use their mail server in Opera9 to access my old AOL email account. It's slick.

There are many wonderful things about Opera, including the Speed Dial that was added last year. It allows you to access nine prefered websites very quickly. Occasionally I run into compatability problems with websites and have to switch back to IE, but I definitely prefer Opera.

I've been using this release now for a couple of days without any problems. I only use it for browsing though ... none of the fancy stuff ...

I've just dropped version 9 in the Trash because a) it can't load Google Mail and b) it can't take me to PayPal payment pages. I hope version 10 is an improvement because FireFox's memory leaks are causing me problems.

Gmail worked for me even with version 9. Sometimes it refused to log in though, that was pretty annoying. I haven't tried Paypal in quite some time.

Since updating to Opera 10 I fund one page that stopped working, I have reported it using the menu option.

With version 9.5 and up, you can have more than nine. I currently have 16 Speed Dials defined. It does take some editing of a config file, but it's really easy to do. :)

Have you tried having Opera "spoof" as IE on a site-by-site basis?

As for the Opera 10 Alpha, it's not for everyone. I don't run it exclusively, because it is an alpha release. The mail database format isn't compatible with the 9.x branch, for instance, and some functions don't work quite right. (For instance, I had some trouble with the IRC client on Saturday.)

Why do we have a thread advertising the alpha release of software? Besides the fact that it's not really newsworthy, I think suggesting new users try the alpha is a terrible way to introduce them to software. If I download Opera 10 Alpha and have the same problems that AG did, I'll think, "Damn, Opera sucks!" Obviously, that's not the case--the latest stable release works just fine. So you're advertising an alpha release to the wrong people--the general public rather than developers and debuggers.

Further, I'd submit that if a developer is interested enough in the status of Opera, she probably doesn't need advertisements for its status--she will track its progress on her own. In short, this thread is targeting the wrong audience, and the right audience has no need of this thread at all.

This isn't the general public, this is a place where people meet who have an interest in science and technology. It's the perfect place to discuss new software.

I might give it another go then, Gmail just kept returning to the login page when I last tried it.

I don't know... it would take a lot for me to move away from Firefox 3 (for all of it's faults).

Hi John,

Both browsers have nice features. A friend says he cannot live without Firefoxes flashblock extension, so he gave up Opera. I'd say when you develop web pages, you need several browsers anyways. Best viewed with Internet Explorer, best viewed with Firefox... it's all no good. That's why I advertise Opera. What I like is that's it's easy to customize. I removed most buttons so it has a very spare look. The mouse gestures and one-key shortcuts are great. Instead of back and forward buttons I just use y and x. It's very quick... downside is, when somebody else uses my computer I have to explain how it actually works.
Yes, some web pages do not work. That's a negative. But they are very few, and for those the tap of a key or a button in the menu will open them in some other browser (customized feature, of course). Use what feels right for you. ;)

I agree with St. Nick about FFx3 and that it has faults, but thought I'd try Opera 9.62, not feeling patient enough to be a guinea pig right now.
I find that it is somewhat more customizable than FFx, but I can't re-order bookmarks and bookmark folders under the Manage Bookmarks tab. They appear to be moving when I grab them, but stay where they were when I have droppped them.

On the Bookmarks pane, you need to click View, then check "Sort by My Order." Otherwise, you can move them on the pane to your heart's content, but they'll default back to previously selected sort.

Since I posted, Opera has reorganized the bookmarks to the exact order they had been in FFx before I imported them, and after I re-chose the "sort to my order" and restarted they also show in this order when I ctrl+b to open the pane on the left side.
Also, can Opera do auto-complete on UserIDs the way FFx can? And why does it not recognize my left-right scrolling like FFx?
And a slight irritant is that I can't double click to highlight just the "trekbbs" part of the URL. It highlights the entire address like IE.
It also has the same bug (as FFx3) that doesn't allow the user to hit the enter key in the save dialog box, the save button must be hit with the mouse pointer.
