Oooh RTD You FIBBER! (Something's Coming...)

In the new DWM RTD reveals that Special Project 3* which both he and Tennant had earlier claimed was cancelled has actually been made and that it's not a 'Children In Need' scene and he adds, "God knows what it'll do to canon!"

Start speculating wildly now.

*SP1 is the Doctor's appearance in TSJA. SP2 is "Dreamland".

Hmm... I'm guessing a multi-Doctor story of some sorts, as he's gone out of his way to mention canon.

As long as it's not a graphic sex scene featuring The Doctor and Rose with The Doctor screaming out "I'm half-human!" the whole way through, I don't care about canon.

*crosses fingers for a Seven Doctor adventure*

But if its not for Children in Need...

If it is a multi-Doctor story then the level of secrecy needed to pull this off with so many actors invovled would be phenomenal!

The mention of "canon" makes me wonder if it's something that would even involve Tennant, except perhaps peripherally.

My guess? It's the "young Doctor" spin-off that the BBC wanted, about him growing up on Gallifrey, that RTD then leveraged into Sarah Jane. I doubt it would be a full series, but a one-shot could be interesting.

It would be unlikely to involve the eighth Doctor, if this interview with McGann is to be believed.

"It's highly unlikely, because since I walked off that set in 1996, no one's ever called me, I've never met these people, I've never been down to Cardiff and met what's his face, Russell T Davies (who masterminded Doctor Who's revival)."

That's another blooming great fib right there, as he was spotted having dinner with RTD last year, which (inevitably) sparked off another round of "McGann in Doctor Who" rumours.

I wouldn't call that a fib. Projects get cancelled and restarted all the time. Plus, although it may not be a CiN scene it's still likely to be some sort of mini-episode as we'd have heard by now if any sort of full-length production had been mounted.

As far as "who knows what it'll do to canon" that doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. Dimensions in Time isn't considered canon so there is precedent that not every BBC-produced Doctor Who story has to fall within regular continuity.

That makes sense and it certainly would be controversial. I must admit that I'm very hesitant on the idea but I'm willing to give it a try before I disown it. ;)

^Of course there's Doctor Who canon. It might be fluid and flexible but clearly there is something there defining what Dr Who is.

I refer you to my signature which works appropriately well for Doctor Who canon in addition to time travel.

Well it is semantics, but for me the day he stops calling himself the doctor, says he isn't a Timelord from Gallifrey and trades his TARDIS in for a Delorean I will except there is no such thing as Dr Who canon. It's not fixed and bloated like Trek's but clearly it is there.

It is semantics, but words have meanings, so if we insist on using words, we might as well try and use them properly.

"Canon" roughly means "an officially recognized set of sacred books", and by extension "the works set in a fictional universe that are officially considered authentic", i.e., what happened and what didn't happen.

By that definition, the name "the Doctor", as well as "Timelords", "Gallifrey" and the TARDIS are not "canon". A much more appropriate term would be to see them as Doctor Who axioms.

Cut the "I'm half-Human!" part and I am so there. :bolian:

ETA:

"Canon" is a meaningless concept. It refers to the body of information that non-canonical installments cannot contradict, and is predicated on the existence of installments specifically designated "non-canonical" that the canonical installments may contradict at their will. But in Doctor Who, new installments are as likely to contradict previous installments as anything else; the entire concept of "canon" and "not-canon" breaks down because the distinction just isn't made. There are TV shows and the TV movie and books, and they reference or don't reference one-another at the creators' whims.
