I cannot believe the amount of negativity I’ve seen on this board and others like it from Star Trek fans in regards to what I feel is absolutely great news for the future of Star Trek. While the mainstream media and general fans have embraced the news, many hardcore fans seem to be taking issue with it. This reaction has left me shaking my head.
I have literally seen people post things like "I would rather have Jonathan Frakes back” or “they should bring back Justin Lin (the guy behind trash like Fast + the Furious Tokyo Drift) and “RIP Star Trek if Tarantino gets this film made”
May I suggest to the folks who doubt Tarantino that they Google the greatest directors of all time...I’ll save you some time. Quentin Tarantino’s name comes up every time. How can any true fan of ST not welcome the news that a true master film maker is going to make a Star Trek film? Would you really prefer a guy like Frakes (who I am a fan of and is a solid workman like director, but is also responsible for the travesty that is Star Trek: Insurrection) over a director who is mentioned in the same breathe as directors like Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick and has produced classics like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Inglorious Basterds? What universe are you people living in?
I can understand when some people suggest that he is not a good fit for ST, but at the same time I think they are underestimating Tarantino. He is not going to attempt to make Star Trek into Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs. He has directed episodes of ER and CSI that stayed true to what those series were and I expect the same here. Yes, he will obviously bring his unique style to the project, but in the end it will still be Star Trek.
I think JJ Abrams has hit an absolute grand slam with his choice of Tarantino. This film will be among the most talked about films of the year when it arrives and not be just another ST film (see Beyond)
Star Trek is truly about to truly "Boldy Go” and that is a good thing...Star Trek fans should stop complaining. This may be the most exciting Star Trek project ever created. I for one cannot wait to see what they come up with.
