Man Sues For $1 Over Right To Wear Skirt In Public

Man Sues The New Orleans Police Department For $1 Over The Right To Wear A Skirt In Public

NEW ORLEANS, May. 5, 2009

(AP) A man sued the New Orleans Police Department, claiming he was harassed by an officer who threatened to arrest him for wearing a black pinstriped skirt to municipal court. Jeremy Don Kerr is asking for $1 in damages, a ruling that his rights were violated, and an order against barring access to public facilities because of gender stereotyping.

The department hasn't been served with the lawsuit and hasn't answered the claim in court.

Kerr filed the civil rights lawsuit last month. He said he finds skirts more comfortable than pants, and wears them with button-down oxfords or T-shirts.

And he said women love it.

What a Dumbass...:guffaw:
Well, men commonly wore skirts in ancient Rome, Greece, and other societies of the ancient world.

When my High School started that uniform crap after Columbine, there was a guy who wanted the uniform supply people to sell him one of the skirts for the chicks. It's too bad they wouldn't do it because that would have been hysterical to see.

If that's a shot at the association between San Francisco and homosexuals, you should educate yourself, because most transvestites (and there's no indication that this gentleman is one just because he wears a skirt) are heterosexual.

What a Dumbass...:guffaw:
Why is he a dumbass? For challenging gender stereotyping, or for suing for a dollar? Because clearly his goal is not to make money, but to make a point, gain publicity for his cause, and to change policy. If anything, it makes him seem quite the opposite of being a dumbass for not claiming some sort of fake emotional distress or damages from this.

Good point. I wonder if the OP feels the same when a gentleman is wearing a Kilt on St Patrick's Day? :vulcan: Would the law in New Orleans ticket someone for wearing a Kilt on any other day BUT March 14th?

March 17th, actually. :)

But that is a valid point. As long as he was "decent" and exposing himself, he should be able to wear a skirt if he pleases.

However, since he was in court at the time, if the judge believes the man is trying to show disdain for the court with his manner of dress, he could fine him for "contempt of court." But that didn't happen. This is about a court officer harassing the man.

If he is willing to waste all his own money on a lawsuit, and isn't asking for monetary damages (besides a dollar), then I say, "go for it."

No, sounds like he's got a good "case."

Suing for just a $1 is silly, but it seems more over his rights being violated (which they were) than money. It's possible the court will award him punitives, too.

My boyfriend wears skirts sometimes. He's told me that sometimes while wearing one on campus frat-looking guys will yell shit at him about being gay or whatever, though he is straight (I should hope so, otherwise our relationship is a sham). It's ridiculous. Who gives a shit what other people wear?

But yeah, I don't think it's stupid. I agree with Locutus.

You heard it here first, folks. TLS supports men who wear skirts and laughs in the (virtual) face of those who would make fun of them. I support your brave stance on this issue. :techman:

In the first season of TNG, men were shown wearing the alternate dress uniform (which was sadly done away with in subsequent seasons, anyway). There were complaints.

I think that was my first clue that Trekkies are not always as high-minded as I believed in my youth.
