One thing that *did* remain constant... (spoilers? maybe.)

I don't think I've seen a thread on this yet, but I have noticed something in this movie that remained a constant...

The unknown officer (Olsen) dies. It always seems like that the unknown officer gets killed, and hardly the major characters (with the exception of DS9). Think this will continue to be the case?

Oh, indeed - the creators said as much. Olsen was the obligatory Red Shirt.

Yeah, that guy was an idiot. Never has a guy been more deserving of the color of his wardrobe.

The moment I saw the color he wore I knew he was toast (pun intended)! I thought it was a great homage, especially since all the red-shirts seemed to die shamefully and for no other reason then to prove the situation was dangerous. I actually got a bit of a chuckle out of Olsen's death because I thought it was the perfect red shirt death.

He could have at least lived a bit longer and stepped on an exploding rock or something.

TOS was waaay better at finding ways to kill redshirts.

In fact, Olson's death was enough to make me hate this movie. And regret that I ever paid to see it.

I've wondered about that. He seemed a bit delirious at the end of his descent, as if there was a problem with his oxygen mix or something.

The very fact he died was a tongue-in-cheek homage to the countless redshirts that went before him. You could say about TOS that it always seemed that the guy in the red shirt died. This was usually because he was a generic security guy. The movie is 100% blatantly killing off the redshirt guy to highlight this. TOAST

What I would do is tease viewers throughout the movie by clearly targetting one red shirt but always "saving" him at the last minute like 4-5 times in the movie and then kill him at the very end for no reason whatsoever.

That would have been pretty nifty, have Olsen survive Orbital Skydives, torpedo barrages, hordes of angry Romulan Miners, only to get accidently ejected with the Warp core(s) at the end.

Actually Olson was supposed to be the chief engineer which left room for Scotty. My favourite thing about the whole incident was Chekov's reaction. It was perfect and flawlessly delivered! Way to go Yelchin!
