Re: One positive, one negative thing about... movies based on video ga
After looking at this post, I realized I haven't seen a lot of these movies (time to Netflix) but of the ones I have seen:
Double Dragon
+Robert Patrick chewing the scenery is really fun.
-Boring martial arts, bad acting.
Street Fighter
+Raul Julia hams it up and Ming Na is hot.
-Not as many "powers" (fireballs etc.) as there should have been (I remember like, ONE).
Mortal Kombat
+Great production design (creatures, sets etc.)
-Drags a bit in the middle.
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
+Cool production design (same as the first movie)
-Booooring story.
Wing Commander
+Nice attempt at the "submarine battle in space" dynamic.
-Not too fond of the ship designs.
Tomb Raider
+Great visual translation of the TR world into a live action medium.
-Too much "daddy" storyline, not enough actual tomb raiding.
Resident Evil
+Cool mystery story.
-Not enough creatures.
Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life
+Fantastic opening sequence from Angelina in bikini to the underwater stuff, I felt like I was watching the game unfold.
-The rest of the movie was just DULL.
Alone in the Dark
+Kept a lot more of the game's mythology and ideas than expected.
-A cool premise was somehow made dull. I never felt the characters were in any danger or even took what was happening around them seriously (granted, they probably weren't).
Silent Hill
+Awesome production design (creatures, sets etc.)
-The scenes in in the "light" world sometimes dragged a bit too much. The movie's pace only picks up when the protagonists are in the "hell world".
DOA
+Babe factor galore. It's a T&A fest.
-Completely hammy acting (though I suspect that was part of the idea).
Out of all of these, "Silent Hill" is my favorite. It does have some truly scary and creepy moments, and after watching the "making of" specials on the DVD you really see how much the crew was trying to stay loyal to the game. Kudos to them for using the game music and visiting chat sites etc. to keep their fingers on the pulse of what fans felt was important.
