One of my biggest nitpicks in Trek is how little progress has been made in flashlight technology

It isn't strictly necessary for all non-tactical missions, but handy. If any location with unknown risk of contamination either way warrants a hazmat uniform, doesn't the same go for light source contamination/pollution/disruption?

24th century and beyond, the mastery of controlling photons should imply they can transport light wherever it is needed without the need of beaming it by light sources and reflectors.

Light Source Pollution only really harms those who are photo sensitive to light (which will be determined on a case by case basis), and astronomy lovers (Think City Light Pollution).

Other-wise, we'll need lights to see where everything is when we go spelunking!

If you're on a stealth mission, that's a whole different ball game.

And pray tell how that would be accomplished without extravagent energy costs?

Keeping the transporter beam on all day to light up an area or remote projection of hologram light via holographic emitters doesn't seem to be a efficient way of energy use when a simple flash light would do the trick?

In the future, being efficient is still key to living in the Modern era IMO.

This is a society that travels at many times the speed of light and converts energy to earl grey tea on a whim

Yet many common folks are not living the extravagent life style. Some folks didn't have replicators at their home giving into their every whim.

Look at Riker in his retired age, he's living out in the boonies with a 20th century style log cabin.

By choice, not by need similar to Jean-Luc’s perfectly flammable brother not installing fireproofing or sprinklers in the chateau for.. well.. je ne sais quois
