Once More With Feeling

An idea has struck me. Glee is a big success. Buffy, Fringe and Scrubs have all had musical episodes. Could Trek be able to do one?

I would see it being a holodeck episode, or maybe something involving mind controlling aliens.

This is meant as a bit of fun, I don't see it seriously happening. Would be fun though :)

Buffy had a couple of decent singers, but most of 'em were crap. Still was a really good episode. Can't say I've seen the Fringe or Scrubs musicals.

Maybe the TOS cast could've pulled it off, after all Shatner has put out a couple of albums, and Nimoy did have the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins... I have no idea if George Takei has any musical talent, but hey, he's right in that musical theater wheelhouse by stereotype... they had Uhura dance and sing in Star Trek 5... and she sang for Charlie X...

DS9 had all the Vic Fontaine stuff. Kira singing Fever. Voy had the Doctor and Seven singing at some point... Can't remember all the details. It's hard to imagine some characters, for instance Janeway, having a passable singing voice.

I guess it could've worked. It couldn't be any worse than Spock's Brain, that TNG clip show, a couple of those DS9 Ferengi eps, Fair Haven, Threshold, or any of the other 100+ dreadful Voyager eps :), or uhh... TATV...

(Scotty) I've got a theory, that it's a demon,
A dancing demon... no, something isn't right there.
(Bones) I've got a theory, some kid is dreamin'
And we're all stuck inside his wacky Broadway nightmare.
(Pavel) I've got a theory we should work this ou - t
(All but Jim) It's getting eerie, what's this cheery singing all about?

(Pavel) It could be wulcans, some evil wulcans...
Which is ridiculous 'cause wulcans they were persecuted
Logic good and love the earth and fork power
and I'll be over here.

(Hikaru) I've got a theory, it could be bunnies...
- all pause - [crickets chirp]

(Nyota) I've got a theor-
(Hikaru) Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes,
They've got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses.
And what's with all the carrots-?
What do they need such good eyesight for anywa - y?
Bunnies, bunnies it must be bunnies!
- pause -
...or maybe midgets...

(Scotty) I've got a theory we should work this fa - s t.
(& Bones) because it clearly could get serious before it's passed.

(Jim) I've got a theory - it doesn't matte - r.
What can't we face if we're together?
What's in this place that we can't weather?
Apocalypse? We've all been there.
The same old trips. Why should we care?

(All) What can't we do if we get in it?
We'll work it through if there's a minute.
We have to try. We'll pay the price.
It's do or die. (Jim) Hey, I've died twice!

What can't we face if we're together?
(Scotty - What can't we face?)
What's in this place that we can't weather?
(Scotty - If we're together.)
There's nothing we can't fa - ce. (Pause)
(Hikaru) Except for bunnies.

Yeah, I'd say the Vic Fontaine stuff, especially "His Way," would count as exactly that.

Also, a little story I like to call "Steppin' Out" ... (see below)

.

Apparently, Leonard Nimoy once played the role of Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof." That role requires CONSIDERABLE singing talent to pull off. I have no idea if Nimoy was any good; all I have to go by was his "Plato's Stepchildren" performance, which seemed rather thin and not at all sufficiently robust to pull off any kind of musical theatre.

If they do this, there needs to be no context.

Like, the episode suddenly becomes a musical for no apparent reason.

And its never referenced or noticed within the episode. Or ever again.

I think the cast of DS9 would be especially suited to carry this off! Obviously we have heard Vic, Kira, and Sisko sing on the show, but Casey Biggs has an amazing singing voice, and Jeffrey Combs has a good voice. They sometimes perform a "Rat Pack" style show at conventions with Armin Shimerman, Vaughn Armstrong, and Max Grodenchik (sorry if I have mis-spelled anyone's names!)

I could certainly see a holodeck/mind control episode...and it would be highly entertaining to see Weyoun and Damar do some verbal sparring in song! I mean, look at this:

I tell you, it could work...and be a whole lot of fun!

What, you never heard the legend of Bilbo, Bilbo, Bilbo Baggins? :p

I'd rather see a greyscale Trek ep than a musical one. 'Course, a grayscale movie would be pretty sweet, too.
