Old stamp collection

I was given my cousins' and uncle's stamp collections. I don't think they're super valuable (I'm not that lucky or that delusional), but how would I find out what the stamps are worth--at least to get an idea? Is there a place online or should I just pay to have it them evaluated?

The "newer" album is mostly from the 1940s-1950s. The older one is from 1890s through WW2.

There are countries/colonies I've never heard of and likely long gone or incorporated into another country ("White Russia," "Schleswig"). A few countries have "returned" politically from before WW1 (Armenia, Georgia, Serbia)

I am not sure about online sources but you could look the stamps up in a Stanley Gibbons catalogue. Most libraries would probably have a copy.

The problem is it is unlikely that you would get a buyer to buy any stamps at the price they are listed at. Stamp collecting has gone out of style in the last few years. With less buyers the prices have plummeted. It might be an idea to see if you can find any of your stamps for sale on eBay and see what prices are being asked for them.

White Russia = Belarus I think it known as White Russia up to about 1920.

Scleswig was a state on the Danish-German border. in 1920 (?) the northern part of it became part of Denmark, the southern part part of Germany.

Definately take the time out to look for a reputable stamp dealer/collector in your area, if there is one. I would not sell them on-line but look up leads and go from there.
You should be able to get an idea from Stanley Gibbons but you're best bet is to find an enthusiast who will help you. Good luck ~ you never know you may be pleasantly surprised :)

Well, I did see a couple of online sites--most of these stamps appear to be pretty common.

No financing a retirement off of this.
