"Old School Style" RPGs

Hi all. I currently own a Wii and PS2 and I am jonesing for an old school esque rpg to try out. I played games like Bards Tale back in the day, KOTOR, and recently Dragon Quest 8 on PS2. I played Twilight Princess for Wii, but this console doesn't seem to have jack in the form of RPGs. Does anyone have any suggestions for old school style rpgs on the Wii or Ps2 or if there are none on those on another console? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you looked at the available Virtual Console titles?

In terms of retail titles, Super Paper Mario and Fire Emblem might fit the bill.

You might enjoy Final Fantasy IV: The After Years on the Wii's Virtual Console. It's a direct sequel to FF IV that takes place 20 years after the original game.

^
There's that too.

Seconded. Completely forgot about this one. :)

Just bear in mind that it's not a $8 game as it looks at first; it's more like a $39 game, if I remember correctly (I did the math a few days ago).

It's not like My Life as a King where the DLC is just fun bonuses; here it's actually needed to finish the story.

Yup, 3700 points... good if you can get the cards on sale.

I wonder if you actually need to play all the chapters to play the final chapter though. I imagine it'll make things easier though.

It might be a Canada only thing. Periodically we get 2 for 1 sales or 20% off sales at Best Buy Canada. It's when I pick up a few 360 point cards myself.

I guess they don't have the same types of sales down there?

First of all... can I ask what you mean specifically by "old school style" RPGs? I think a lot of people might have different ideas of what that entails. For example, when you say that you used to play Bard's Tale, are you referring to the "old school" 1980's version that appeared on early PCs, or the rebooted PS2 version from about five years ago? KOTOR is definitely new generation action-RPG. DQ8 definitely has what I would consider to have "old-school RPG" game mechanics, albeit with an amazing graphical update.

So, I consider old-school RPGs to be those early console RPGs led by the DQ/DW and FF franchises. In this case, people have already mentioned the FFIV sequel on the Wii Virtual Console. Otherwise, I would look at games released for the PS1 that are playable on the PS2. Now you're looking at the whole slew of good RPGs, including FFV and FFVI on Final Fantasy Anthology, FFIV and Chrono Trigger on Final Fantasy Chronicles, DQ7, StarOcean (PS2 version was fantastic, IMO), Wild Arms, Saga Frontier... and a whole wackload of others that I am sure I'm forgetting.

That's too bad, because that means that very few people got to experience this wonderful game.
