They were going for "relatable" not "nerdish."
I don't think the Rush song really fits the chase scene. But I guess nothing would because the fact remains that Kirk is listening to the Beastie Boys and they don't call it "classic rock" they still call it "metal."

Well, when he's in the car you seem him turn off the Nokia sponsored car phone, and then he selects a radio station called "Metal." It's only on for a second.
If this is so many years into the future, wouldn't music from the 90s and 00s be considered classic rock? Just saying
