KING Island is at the centre of the federal election's border protection debate, with residents lobbying for the Bass Strait community to become a centre for asylum seekers.
A delegation of community leaders led by Mayor Charles Arnold has asked the Immigration Department about taking 200 displaced people.
Cr Arnold said the proposal would not involve detention centres with razor wire and he hoped the proposal would help boost the island's static population and allow hundreds of job vacancies to be filled. At the moment, the island's massive employment void is being filled in the short term by 120 Korean students who are working at King Island's meatworks and renowned cheese factory.
"The idea is only in its infancy but we received a good hearing from Immigration Department officials in Canberra a month ago," Cr Arnold said.
"The island has infrastructure to support a population of 3500 and we could take at least 200 displaced persons.
