All of the internet speculation and back-and-forth debating on this and other forums regarding the plot and cast is creating great buzz for this film. I think if we, the fans, had more concrete information, there would actually be less for us to talk about, and thus less early interest in the film. The fact that we are arguing over who should play Kirk, or what the plot/timeframe should be is a good thing for the overall health of this film.
Abrams is handing out information with a medicine dropper, and in a calculated manner. He gives us just a little information at a time -- enough for us to debate and discuss, then move on to the next peice of information. But he can't give us too much right now. If we learn too much at one time, the discussion boards will burn out too early, and we will have nothing to fuel the discussions next year.
The early interest and hype this film receives is totally dependent on forums such as trekbbs and others. Abrams is handing us just enough information to allow us fans to pace ourselves in a way that will keep the forums going strong until next year when the actual general public markteing campaign kicks in.
The bottom line is this: the deliberately slow dissemination of information is actually adding to the early buzz this film is receiving -- and to Abrams, that's a good thing.
