Official Announcement: Fallon to Replace Conan in '09

Jimmy Fallon and Lorne Michaels just announced this live on MSNBC. Exactly WHEN it will happen in '09 is unclear, but that's the plan.

Of course, it was long-time rumored...guess it's official now.

Oh, joy. Question: Why can't the entirety of the early '00 SNL cast just drop back into obscurity where they belong?

To his credit, he seemed quite affable and off-the-cuff taking questions at the announcement earlier, but who knows how much that was set up in advance?

So now Fallon can mug at the camera and laugh uncontrollably and it won't be breaking character.

It could be okay...this is the kind of thing where you just have to wait and see. You never know who could turn out to be a great interviewer/host, despite how awful they are in other areas of entertainment.

This is great news... for Craig Ferguson.

Maybe Fallon will do surprisingly well, but I doubt it. I've never found him funny. Not that this uninspiring casting surprises me. NBC's been trying to find a decent host for the crap slot after Conan for years, and the best they've come up with is Carson Daley.

I know it seems like people aren't giving Fallon a fair shake, but this is far different than when Conan took over from Dave. (And let's face it, at the beginning, Conan did suck. Hard.) Conan was still pretty much a nobody. We've watched Fallon grin and flub and giggle his way through endless SNL sketches and Weekend Updates. I don't know who they could have picked that would be better than Fallon, but I'm also straining to think of anyone worse.

Conan, while shaky at the start, had a damn good track record as a Simpsons writer at the very least.

Fallon? Er, Taxi? any number of endlessly forgettable SNL sketches?

Fuck, just thinking about it makes me want to give Carson Daly a hug.
