odo on defiant

rick

Lieutenant Junior Grade
was odo really a bridge office on the defiant? (the advesary)

he was a bajoran officer on ds9...and kira too...why were they in senior command of federation ships?

Kira's position was clearly political, a deliberate finger flicked at those Bajorans, Cardassians and assorted others who opposed Federation interference or doubted Starfleet's commitment towards protecting and respecting Bajor. It would only make sense that Sisko would give Kira not only the XO position of the station, but also the XO position of the badass Starfleet vessel - no doubt against his superiors' wishes, too!

Odo in turn didn't seem to have any high position in the chains of command of either the station or the ship. He was formally a member of the militia, but not of any known rank; possibly an enlisted person, or then a "special case". His powers over the station derived from his profession: just like the lowly Lieutenant Bashir could command Sisko around in medical matters, Odo had certain security-related jurisdiction that superceded even Sisko's.

Odo never really commanded the Defiant, or participated in command of that ship - at best, he crewed a console to cover for a fallen redshirt, and/or tagged along for his mission at the destination. The most he got command over was the runabouts in "Vortex" et al. - and we know that those are given out to anybody who bothers to ask, for joyrides as well as legitimate Starfleet missions.

They just threw whoever the heck they wanted on the Defiant. Pretty clear they weren't putting much thought into the technicalities of who should be there or not. They just wanted to put familiar characters that the viewers know in there instead of unknown characters who would make far more plot-sense.

Just wanted to add when Worf was assigned to DS9 and the Defiant he assumed the position of Executive Officer of the Defiant.

Well that was the plan. In "Tears of the Prophets" Kira takes command when Sisko faints. Worf is right there on the bridge.

Of course you could argue that Worf could have taken command but didn't as he was best suited at tactical given it was a battle but still...

It would have been nice to have a Defiant crew and DS9 crew. Yet given the show could barely fit in it's regular and supporting cast, adding a new crew would have been tough. I think maybe adding one or two supports and dividing the main cast might have worked.

Worf and Kira on the Defiant was contradictory through the series.
Worf Commanded over Kira in "Paradise Lost" and "Rules of Engagement."
Kira commanded over Worf in "Tears of the Prophets"

I don't see much of a problem with that. The Defiant is an add on to DS9, a bigger and more useful Runabout. With no set crew (as seen through the years with DS9 staff on board and it being empty when Worf's living there) it would probably have a mission determined crew. Sometimes Kira would be at the top of the food chain, sometimes Worf. Mission specific staffing.

Assuming the Bajoran rank system matches up to our own, Kira and Worf would have been the same rank anyway before Season 7.

As Sisko's XO Kira would have a position of power from being on Sisko's staff. But it was made clear from the beginning Odo's power didn't leave the station. As said previously - he's always there as an advisor or covering someone. Though it's Sisko's ship. He can place whoever he wants on it. Even Garak.

The problem being that Kira should have no rank on the Defiant. DS9 is a Bajoran station. The Defiant is pure Starfleet though. Indeed in Apocalypse Rising Worf tells Kira that while she may command the station (in Sisko' absence) he commands the Defiant.

As Timo said one could only suggest that Sisko perhaps told the DS9 Starfleet crew that Kira was XO on the Defiant too. I don't see why Worf wouldn't take command of the Defiant in Tears of the Prophets given they were in the middle of a Federation battle with the Defiant probably having some ship leadership status also.

I always thought that it would have made more sense to just have a Starfleet crew manning the Defiant at all times, but I liked Kira and Odo so much that I just kinda let go eventually. Worf being the Executive Officer on the Defiant was a good move, but not followed through right.

Also, it never made sense how suddenly the senior staff would all up and vanish away with the Defiant after it came to the station. Sometimes no-names were left in charge whilst our people were all off having adventures. What happened? DS9 not exciting enough anymore? It just bothered me a bit during season 3.

Good point. I actually think they forgot they did this line of dialogue:

KIRA
I'm glad the two of you are in
agreement. But with the captain
gone, I'm in charge of the
station, and I say we stay.

WORF
You may be in charge of the
station, major, but I command the
Defiant.

I think there's a deleted scene in "Tears of the Prophets" that explains this.

Sisko: All right... people. We're shipping out on... the DEFIANT at oh eight hundred... hours.

Kira: Shotgun.
Worf: Shot- fuck!

That's what really bugged me about "Tears of the Prophets", why put Kira in on the Defient and in some cases in command of it, and leave Jadzia, who IS a Star-Fleet bridge officer on DS-9. When Kira, was the XO of DS-9 and is should have been at her duty station in that episode. I suppose they just needed to have Dax on DS-9 so the pah-wraiths possessed
Dukat could kill her. Very, Very, Very Lame...:(

Change of Heart. Dax and Worf weren't allowed to go on missions together. Made better sense to have Worf on the Defiant.
