Hi All, I'm new here, but I wanted to remember this hilarious poem one more time.
Good morning all! :D

Ode to Spot
Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defences.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behaviour you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

This one inspired me to write one in a similar style for the best friend I ever had some 10 years ago

Geordi LaForge, he is a friend of mine
A male homo sapien, and completely blind
The visor that he wears across his face so plain
Sends light and image data to receptors in his brain
His attempts to mate and find a woman to undress
Are perceived as shy and awkward, and have not achieved success
He works in engineering, and although completely blind
He treats me like a human and is always very kind

It's great, yes, but it doesn't caress one's ears the way this greeting does

I really love this poem. I do actually think it's quite well written, not just for a Star Trek episode but for a poem in general. As a lover of Data, Spot, and all cats, I think it is wonderful!

Thankfully that also helps dispel the notion that "Data was the only human character in the ship". She shows engaged interest and not in any way imitating a doe in the middle of the road gawking at an 18-wheeler at dusk with its headlights on. He can't be bothered, dreaming of what's-her-name from "The Game" yet again. Best of all, neither is cultishly spouting pseudo-proto-Vulcan dialogue in the way that 90s Trek made eminently watchable, actually... And try saying that with a mouthful of freshly chewed saltine crackers in front of Sally at the Seashore...

Or perhaps Troi was thinking not of whatever she is watching but what the goldshirt security dude in the background could do with her and her Imzadi, thus telepathically sending her thoughts to Riker and thus break the continuity where she said she couldn't do such a thing outright several times in season 1 long before "Nemesis" was spitooned out. They just couldn't show that on TV since most adults would get bored of the three of them playing "Scrablle" very quickly, even with the words Riker would use... (in other words, taking something with an ingrained trait and not bothering with it - how can viewers not accuse "sloppy scripting" as a result.)
