Odd TNG uniforms

I have just been re-reading the DC TNG Mini-series (first issue cover dated Feb. 88). In the back, it talks about the comic being the result of many conversations between DC, the shows writers and extensive use of the show bible.

Were those rather funky uniforms suppose to appear on screen or were they created just for the comics?

The whole series is a bit WTF - which is understandable when you consider that the writers didn't have much to go off in terms of how the characters should act.

They did manage to get that Wes was an asshole, even in the first issue:

There are lots of off things in it - Picard leaves the bridge deserted, Data says things like "I'm really excited about the mission!" and Troi can see the future...

I always wondered about those uniforms.

I believe these comics were written either before the series started or very early in the series so of course there's going to be some WTF moments.

Aren't they characters from another show or another comic, or something? *Tries to remember.* It's 20 years ago. *Fails*. :(

That is just terrible. Crew members with She-Hulk bodies - check out those legs! - and wearing capes??? WTF indeed.

And the crewman's hair makes him look like the Heat Miser from the animated Christmas cartoon, "Year Without A Santa Clause!" WTF indeed! -- RR

They are husband and wife, later in the issue they have a row on the bridge while Picard holds his head in his hands.

If Bob Greenberg is lurking about, he can answer any questions about this era better than I can; however, iirc, the Buckley's uniforms were to illustrate that their cultural heritage much like Worf's sash. Also, Pablo Marcos got criticized for making the crew too "fit" in their uniforms which he toned down when he worked on the ongoing monthly. He also was fond of drawing wild hairstyles to show illustrate that in the 24th century hair styling was as vastly different from today as ours is from a hundred years ago.

I liked Pablo's take on TNG, like Tom Sutton on the first run of the TOS DC comics, he gave Trek a stylized look that seperated it from other comics and yet paid homage to the science-fiction comics from Gold Key and others.

I have one of the issues in this series. I think it's the last one... Dated July '88. They get trapped on a planet and Data literally holds the answer inside him so they have to do surgery on him to remove the storage device that has the info on how to get off the planet. I've got a scan of one of the pages *digs through photobucket*

Geordi and Data are NOT supposed to be that buff! (Especially Geordi!) Nor is Data supposed to get embarrassed (though he does have that modesty subroutine so he'll keep his clothes on).

^ Whoa! What issue is THAT from? *would love to learn the circumstances behind that*

THIS is exactly what TNG was lacking.

Capes.

If TNG had capes, then no one would be questioning Kirk vs. Caped Picard.

Yes, but then what's to stop Kirk from donning a cape? Kirk with a cape would be....unstoppable....

If Data got embarrassed, would he wear an outfit like this?

It is from the second issue in which the crew celebrate Christmas, iirc. Either that or it's from that issue in which Data was thrown back in time to 1970s San Francisco and had to blend in at the Castro District.
